I replaced a indoor fan that hummed real loud with a new fan it hums real loud also it is on a slider switch and I was told the switch is the problem because it is not a fan switch, does this make sense?

Yes,a regular dimmer isn't made for a fan motor, either put on a switch or get a speed control made for a fan. Otherwise you will burn out switch or fan motor quickly

Get a motor rated dimmer.

Its amazing how many dead fan service calls i get just to discover someone used a non motor rated dimmer...
