We have some Wyze cameras that are cheap and work well with the Wyze app on a phone. Stick a 256mb card in there and they keep about a week of video, and take a time stamped picture whenever motion is detected.

They do have an inexpensive subscription service, but it's optional.

Blink cams work very well and you can use a USB stick to save video to or for $10 a month you can add in unlimited cameras with cloud storage. Pretty good deal really.

Recently installed a Hikvision NVR system am using outdoors but cameras work inside or out. View over app on phone. No charge or subscription other than initial cost of system. You can buy nvr with 4 (or more) cameras for as little as $200. Cameras are wired though so need to run some eithernet cables between cameras and nvr and between NVR and your internet connection (cable modem, etc). Works really good day or night.

I use a Ring stick up camera. I think I paid just over 100 bucks for it. They can be used indoor and outdoor. Im going to get a couple others to put inside and outside the shop. The thing works pretty good. Its powered by a battery. I usually have to charge it about every 3-4 months. Im not sure what your budget it but this works for me. You can set it up to alarm if it detects motion. My camera records every time it senses movement. When Im out of town ill set the alarm if it detects movement.
My house has 8 camera already set up on a DVDR via an APP on my phone. I didn't want to add any more cameras to the app. I already have a ring doorbell so I thought this was the easiest set up.

In addition to my Ring equipment, I have had an assortment (7 total) of Yi home cameras for a little over six years, and they have operated flawlessly the whole time. My only complaint would be with the software app, which, although perfectly functional, is somewhat less-than-(user)-friendly, and contains some Chinglish artifacts.

They can be had for under $30 each, are full-featured and easy to set up.
No added costs or subscription required, but they do offer a higher-featured step-up option for a monthly fee.

how wide of a view or do you have to pan around

Not sure who this is directed at but Hikvision cameras are stationary and have a fairly wide view. This is screenshot with four cameras from the phone app. Cameras are mounted under soffits 2nd story.

I use Ubiquiti stuff for our home network, and so use their cameras, as well. The little wifi ones are inexpensive, but the larger 4k wired ones the opposite of that. Nice interface and they work well, though.

Same, I'm really happy with them. I have about 8 of them.

100% on the Wyze cameras. You can find them on the shelf at Home Depot, or online at Wyze.com or Amazon. The cost is incredible with cameras starting at under $20.

I have 6, 5 are outside one is inside. My oldest cam has been outside under the eaves at the corner of my roof for 4 years now The app for the phone runs great and is easy to use. At this price point you can't go wrong. Like was said in another comment, just add the mini SD card and you can store locally for a week for free. Add the cheap cloud service and you can store video indefinitely.

For anyone considering a camera, I'd suggest picking one up online or the next time you are at HD. Try it out, I think you might be surprised. I know I was.

Wyze makes cameras with a standard (wider) view or a close up/telephoto lens. Order what you need. I have the standard/wider for my driveway, and a zoom cam is pointed on the street where I park my company car at night.
Either cam is at the same price point. Order what you need.

I'm looking as well, but I've given up the thought of no subscription. I'm looking at Roku. They have an internal pan and scan. The yearly subscription for all the cameras is $100/year. I have one Roku tv and I'm going to buy a stick for the other TV. Then I'll have the cameras on my phone and on my tv if I want. They have a variety of security stuff.. It's all rebadged and enhanced Wyse.

Same here. I've installed a couple systems for friends and they love the ease of use.
