Anyone in the Houston area looking for a heavy duty drill press might want to look at this one for $250. Variable speed and power feed.

I think you have linked the incorrect item.?

If i Think what that drill press is, then $250 is exceptionally a good deal

That looks like a gear head drill press that has been modified to be belt driven.

Its still gear driven but it has been modified to be driven by an external motor, the motors on those are built into the head so are not easy to replace if they fail, I don't believe they are a standard motor. One thing that you can no longer do with that one is lower the head, it has a crank and rack for doing so but that motor mounting bracket will block the column from coming through the head as it lowers. I would avoid that machine personally even at that price, unless you needed parts for another. It has probably also lost half its speeds as they generally used a 2 speed motor.

I will give him an A for thinking outside the box but it’s not all that expensive to have the motor rewind. 5F55438F-E404-4497-8BCC-32B5E2F7AF58.jpeg

Maybe where you are, but here there's only one electric motor shop left in town and they don't want walk-in small motor projects. They only do industrial big motor stuff and they'll hit any small motor at $250 just to get you to go away.

I've tried in my neck of the woods.......and gave up trying to rewind any motor now a days, only makes sense maybe 5% of time. The price of copper is now so crazy high and then what Jack Vines wrote in post above; motor repair shops just don't really want to deal with it and quote high prices.

I recently had to get a Cameron sensitive drill press motor rewound, it's maybe 1/6hp, fits in my palm and they quoted me $250 just rewind it, not incl. rebuild.
In disbelief I went to three other shops, one said sorry not interested, the other two left prices open with minimum starting around $200 but most likely go higher when adding tech hours to the job. I've now learned how to fully rebuild motors because of this, I just cant rewind.

Moral of the story, finding other existing motors used or new, mostly used ones is the best scenario when cost is a factor, as there's millions of good ones available at scrap prices. In my neck of the woods, I can find NOS 1HP Baldors all day for under $100. $50 for 3 phase motors which is now the way to go with how cheap VFD's are now a days.

There's a good reason why there's a Sticky VFD conversion thread in this forum.

In my part of the world you don't generally bother having motors rewound either, not worth it on any machine you would find in the average home workshop, just get another motor.
You would only bother for something that needed a non standard motor and you couldn't get a new one.

we had a old shop with an older guy who rewound anything for the cost of wire and $35...unfortunately he passed away last year and the shop was replaced with a fast food joint.

I still miss him and his abilities....
