I picked up an entire truckload of stuff at an estate sale for $75, metal table/desk included. Ended up selling the table for $75 which paid for the whole load. Lots of people collect those desks....

Not a tanker desk but a cool vintage industrial type of a desk. The work surface is 42" high so I figured it was an old dispatch type of desk or something like that. it is 28" deep and came with a small hutch/cubby for the top. $75 off craigslist! It is pretty heavy gauge steel and very sturdy. Someday when I have time Ill sand it down and repaint it but I don't mind the "patina"

Got this for $25, gummint labs surplus. Very sturdy, and the credenza came with it.

Thanks guy! I removed the velvoleum top and replaced it with moss colored ultrasuede and the metal case itself is Rustoleum Hammered Rosemary.

Edited: Sorry Lu-Max, I forgot to add the pics.

I get mine from state/school auctions. I have a few other Globe Wernicke pieces, including a matching tanker desk and flat top book case similar to this one.

I have several steel bookcases. Most with the glass sliding doors. Got them years ago when they were still available. Lots of competition back then.

My Globe Wernicke bookcase is made of oak with up and over glass doors and is modular in horizontal sections.

I passed on an entire row of wooden Globe Wernicke library type book shelves last year at auction. They were standard open face with adjustable height shelves, all wood made to go up against the wall or back to back. My auction buddy bought an entire library worth(100's) of no-name shelves from the same auction for $10 but had no where to put them and ended up forfeiting them back to the auction.

Nice looking cabinet! I picked up one similar at a county auction last year. I have bought and sold 50 or so tanker desks over the last 5 years or so then my wife decided she wanted one. I went to the auction for something else and this set was there. I had never seen a tanker with that shape of top on it. I ended up getting in a bidding war with another lady which sucked, but I had to have the set.

I also have a 3 section steelcase barristers bookcase.
It will be years before I have time to strip and redo all the desks, bookcases, file cabinets and chairs to match.

Not sure if this was covered in this extensive thread, but these old desks are readily
available on public auctions sites (e.g., publicsurplus.com or auctions international).
School districts and colleges routinely sell off massive batches of items, and desks are
among the most common items. Not all the desks are fancy art-deco Steelcases, but
some are.

Only 47-48 times

I posted an entire row of double stacked desks at a school board auction on one of those pages back there.

It was in my in laws business when they closed up shop...took it home and stuck it in a barn on the farm! I don't have immediate plans but will hold on to it. Probably keep it there till I get a bigger shop.

I thought I'd try here before I bought one elsewhere..

I'm set my sights on one of these for my desk lamp project..

If anyone knows where one might be...

Thanks.

It's just stripped, then sanded at 80, 220 and 300 grit, then coated Penetrol to seal it a bit.

In areas of use, the Penetrol will wear, but a quick wipe will sort it back out.

I want to do this with my tool chests. Is Penetrol a brand name? Does it dry to the touch? Is this better / easier than shooting a clear coat over the bare metal?

Penetrol is made by Flood. Should be able to get it at Lowes/Home Depot.

It does dry to the touch.

I like it better than clearcoat, but that is just a personal preference. It seems to "look" better.

That said, it can wear off. High use areas will need to be reapplied.

I have a couple of these, the Dazor lights are better.
You should be able to find one at a local machinery dealer.

Yeh, I wasn't super picky on having a Fostoria or a Dazor, I just liked the style.

Couldn't buy "new." It just wouldn't have been right. ;)

It's going to be sticking out of the back of this..

Anyone know the best way to get a key matched to a lock?

My 4 year olds are all over my office sometimes and I'd love to be able to lock my desk, but it came with no key..
