Good score FarmBoy!

That's a nice tanker, farmboy!

Thanks, guys. It's got a little rust on one side, but other than that, it's in great shape.

Mine is just like that but with drawers on both sides. Mine was made in 1956. You can still get the rubber bumpers and grommets that go in the drawer wells. I got mine for free when my son and I took a baseball road trip to St. Louis.

That's awesome that you got yours on a roadtrip with your son. Pretty much all the tools I've bought have neat roadtrip stories attached to them too. I'll have to get a couple rubber bumpers. I think I'm missing one or two.

Looks like a typewriter drawer. A good place for a grinder

Yeah, the typewriter drawer is pretty neat the way it swings out. I was thinking about bolting a buffer to it. It's very heavy steel, so it should work great for that. Plus it swings away when not in use.

29 desks available at $500 each! Dang, that's pricey.

This one is cool though-

It's crazy what some people try to sell them for. I wonder if anyone actually pays their asking price. :dunno:

Couple pictures of the rolltop desk. We ended up picking up the desk 10 minute drive from where it was made so we had to go and see what was once the Art Metal Construction Company factory.

I ended up getting those cabinets I posted a few weeks ago. They turned out to be Art Metal brand. I pointed it out to the guy when I went to get them. He came down 50 for me in price to so I am happy with that.

Picked up these 2 matching Art Metal tables from a lady who had them in Iowa last week. She happened to be able to meet me in St Paul so that worked out nicely. About an hour away for me. Better than 4 to Iowa lol.

Also a picture mainly of a metal credenza I picked up from CL a few weeks ago. $60 and the guy had it listed as a metal garage cabinet. I think it is super cool.
The pic also shows a corner of my Shaw Walker open leg table used for dining room table and 2 of the Emeco chairs I scored from CL last fall for $120 for all 4.
The cabinet in the far left is a Simmons sliding lamp cabinet used to store a crockpot and a couple other things.

I have been extremely busy working on a 1940 Chevy 4 door I picked up around Thanksgiving and am dead set on having on the road by Back To the 50's weekend.
I'll post a build thread one of these days. I have been really trying to not let my addiction to vintage metal furniture or the Internet get the best of my time in the garage lately;)

I have some more vintage steel furniture and such I will post up in here someday. Gotta stay focused on the car.

btw, Smedley, nice job on the cabinet. Bellyup, Good looking lamp you've got there.

Speaking of wifi in the garage, its messing with me uploading pictures. I gotta run now but will try when I get home again later.

A few more pictures from our road trip to get the desk. The main building pictured is what was known as factory #1 I believe.

The plaque on the wall is located to the right of the front entrance to that building.
I think the plaque on the rock is for workers who died during WWI. The rock is placed in a small open lawn area to the right of factory #1.

I am not positive if the other buildings to the right and left were Art Metal factories or not but I figured I would get a picture of them.

So I received a missing security token message once pictures have uploaded. I have contacted administration. Once I get it worked out I will post the pictures. I guess tonight is not my night for pictures.

Finally got back to it a week later and got it to work uploading a couple at a time. worked but it was weird. Pictures probably to big. Anyways here they are finally. Enjoy!

FYI- if you are in the Minneapolis area, there are quite a few options on CL now. I found a couple of $20 tanker desks, vintage kitchen stuff- etc... I now want one of the desks but I will not be getting clearance from the tower to have that in the house.
MN battery chuck, you selling your desk? Cause if that ad is not yours, you should.

Happy hunting.

If someone offered me that kind of money for my rolltop I am not sure what I would do. That rolltop had been fir sale for a few months anyways. Yeah I am in the Minneapolis area, north though.
Frankly my Internet connections should probably have Craigslist blocked from them lol. I am in no need for more desks right now but for some reason I keep looking for them. I may be addicted

I do have one for sale just for the heck of it The high priced woodgrain one pictured in the garage is mine. I don't want to sell but would for 500 in fact I have it on car dollies and using it as a mobile workbench at the moment.

Happy hunting to you as well!

I got scolded about some things I wanted to pick up this weekend. (but may still)
Good luck on that sale- that's awesome! It's a really cool piece. If you get no takers, I suggest talking to Findfurnish- that seems to be their clientele.

Luckily I still have the sole decision on what I bring in. She has said I may be crazy a couple times but I could be spending my money on far worse habits that's for sure. There really is a lot of cool stuff out there.

Kinda off topic, but it'll be sitting on top of my filing cabinet, so I thought I'd share another lamp I'm working on..

Hey all! I bought an awesome steel dest with panel legs and a linoleum top. It needs painting as it was badly spray painted. I wanted to have it powder coated, but can't figure out about the top. I want to keep the original linoleum as it has great character, but we can't get the top off. We unscrewed 4 short screws from the bottom, but it didn't budge. Help!

I suppose it is possible there are long screw bolts all the way up from the bottom of the legs? It pretry much has to come apart. Would be very inconvenient fir shipping purposes if it didn't come apart.

I finally figured out its a steelcase! I guess I'll just start unscrewing things and see what happens! Any idea how to post a pic from my phone?

Thanks so much

Go advanced on the reply and go to the little paperclip thingy. That will bring you to the attachment manager. Pretty straight forward from there. Unscrewing parts till it comes apart will work just remember where the screws go lol.

Got it. It also has a tag in the desk drawer with AFF 1890 on it. Curious. I adore the thing especially since it was $15!

Nice score. I'm on the lookout for a 6ft open leg rounded top single drawer desk / tabe like that. Have a 49" Shaw Walker right now. Good luck on the desk and keep us posted with your progress.

Can someone tell me what this cabinet is called? It reminds me of a buffet. It is metal with a Formica top.
Thanks so much for any help, also, how do I start my own thread? lol

Maybe, just not sure, I was never a a metal desk person, my hobby is in antique furniture, lighting, but recently I have had the pleasure to handle industrial furniture, and I like some of it. I was trying to figure out what I could do with this, reclaim, re purpose? so how do I start a new thread? lol

That's definitely a credenza. I had the matching desk and credenza set like that but my credenza had 5 drawers and two small cabinet doors with one shelf behind them. It can be used as an entertainment center with a big f'n flat screen on top or out in the shop with tools all in/on it.

These are used in garages and shops throughout the country and beyond. I personally am using 4 desks in my garage shop and a couple old school metal tanker tables. Take a look through the other pages of this thread and you will see good examples of them used in garage settings.

The last one was covered inside and out with chicken dirt though.

Anyone use these things with a vise attached?

they can hold up pretty good. with any welding...as long as theres no vinyl or flash wood, trim etc that stuff fires up quick.
really depends how big though of clamp and pounding. some desks can crumple if they are newer and thinner
