Me and my dad had five or six of these when we had our rehab company up and running. He might still have one or two but I don't have anywhere to put them at the moment, I hate that I'm going to end up buying another one down the road, instead of keeping one of our old ones.

My wife got one for free or maybe $10 at a garage sale, price was right but I am 70 years old and at 155 pounds I am not a weight lifter, she thought outside the box and bribed a couple of young guys to haul it out for $20. It was worth it. After we got it home we disassembled it, she used the drawers to put some of her stuff in (she does metal sculpture-see SCRAP Metal Design on Facebook) the other end is awaiting to be repurposed into something "artsy" and I put the top on another bench I had to make it bigger and the Formica surface is nice to work on.

If anyone is in Pittsburgh, I just dropped off two matching brown tanker desks in pretty great shape to Construction Junction. I've got a third headed that way soon.

If you're in Pittsburgh and need a tanker, I still probably have 4 more around the studio.

Hi Folks, I've loved every bit of this thread. I've got a few pieces myself.
Take a look!
The Black and white desk with fake (vinyl) carbon fiber effect top I got from a man in upstate New York who was moving to Florida. Its an "Invincible" brand.
-This one needs new bearings on the file drawer roller. (advise welcome).
The Silver one is a McDowell & Craig -my Battleship.
This one was $50! The catch, a five floor walk-up on the lower east side of Manhattan. The building was built in 1890 and had narrow creaky staircases. To boot, I picked it up in the middle of a blizzard. Still worth it.
-I will need to address the scuffed up clear-coat from the move.
The Emeco chair - Picked up for $40 in Brooklyn. The seat was torn so I replaced it with upholstery vinyl.

I hate to bring the bearer of bad news....but if you would have kept it all original and in decent shape you would have had yourself a pretty valuable piece of furniture. I sold the one I posted for a little under a grand a couple of years ago.

Project2501, that Cole steel cabinet is awesome! Was that a Craigslist find? Is it strictly as a storage cabinet in the garage or do you have any plans for cleaning it up and/or painting it and making it a piece of interior furniture?

I have very quickly fallen in love with the style of all the old-school office furniture. I am currently restoring an ASE tanker desk, a rolling office chair w/o arms, and two stationary office chairs w/ arms. I will share them all in the next month or so when I complete them.

So for the last couple weeks the GF and I have been thinking of cheap ways to make raised garden beds. Not until yesterday did I come up with the idea of building a wood frame on top of a desk. We could even plant in the drawers too! I have a pretty good in with my local university surplus center. I have contacted them about a price on a 12 pack of desks. They are almost overwhelmed with old metal desks and they end up scrapping some of not so nice ones. This could be one time the current low price of scrap metal can work in my favor.

Any thoughts on the desk garden idea?

BTW, that cole steel cabinet deal is pretty cool!!

Hey Chuck, I always pick up fence boards for free on the side of the curb for different projects. I made a cat tower for my girls cats to chill out on, a bunny hutch, some vintage looking signs and a center divider wall for my shop out of them along with a host of other things. One other thing being raised garden beds, picture below. I only have time and a few staples invested and they work great. As for the desk idea, it will eventually rust out, I would rather keep/resell the desks and use something along these lines for cheap raised gardens. jmo...

I had a couple of the credenzas but they were the slightly newer style with the chrome square tubing legs. I would LOVE to find the older ones like that!!

You guys are gonna hate me. The Sears I work at was tossing a classic out when I was getting low hours. Didn't get a chance to post it. Looked like a yellow version of this desk posted a few posts back. They were offering it free but it was in the way too much. They demo'd it and crushed it. It just needed a good cleaning, new slides, and a new paint job and it would've been golden.


I'm sorry. This was at the end of summer.

Here is the one I work at every day.

Our company was founded in 1964. I don't know how old the desk is, but I found this paper in it last fall. It was an add for the classified section of the local paper in 1971.

Tommy: cost to run an ad in the newspaper for 3 days. consider i started work the next year at 16 for $1.65 an hour and gas was $.29 per gallon that was expensive advertising.

All: here's my old Navy or Boeing desk that i'm almost done cleaning off the 10 layers of lead paint on it so a before and a 80% pictures for the thread. these desks are 6 foot wide and 3 foot deep tops and weigh about 350 pounds.
