Just a "heads up" on the Chinese grinders... (I own four)

A buddy was using his HF grinder with a wire brush on it to clean up some floor areas before epoxy coating. Fortunately, he had his fireman's rubber coat on as protection. That decision probably saved his life.

As he let off the power and went to pick up the brush from the floor, the arbor with the wire wheel attached exited the head of the grinder. It bounced off the floor, hit his little finger, nearly severing it off, shot up his Fireman's suit and then took off across the shop. The wire brush melted the rubber suit where it contacted it.

This all happened in the blink of an eye.

Post accident analysis by an engineering company revealed that the arbor had been machined to the wrong tolerance. When the machine heated up, the arbor bearing clearance was large enough to allow the arbor to exit the machine.

HF has some amazing prices of pretty reliable machinery. But Chinese quality control isn't quite up to early 60's Japanese QC yet.

I have checked arbor play on all of my grinders when at operating temperature. All seem tight or at least as tight as my De Walt grinder.

Check yours out and if you see large amounts of movement, beware. And ALWAYS USE YOUR GRINDER'S SAFETY SHIELD, wear eye protection, gloves, and keep others away from your work area.

Good luck out there.

You can find good grinders at pawn shops for under $40-50 easily around here, just make sure they have the guard. A lot of the ones around here are under $30 but don't have a guard.

Yeah, what's with all the grinders w/o guards? I see them all over CL, and when you ask about the guard the answer is always the same: "Took it off when I got the grinder cuz it gets in the way".

I can understand not using a guard with a cup brush, but what about everything else??

I leave the guard on with a cup brush unless its got to come off for access, I take it off for sanding discs though as you can't get flat enough to the work. I don't get why people buy cheap grinders, its one of my most used tools and good ones are cheap anyway and really good ones aren't much more.

Anyone use that cheap Kawasaki from Amazon that's variable speed? I'd like variable speed for a diamabrush and it's far and away the cheapest.

Not seeing the problem here. I have 5 more fingers on my other hand. Plus another eye. Only one beer belly though, maybe I should wear an apron.

This is hilarious. Especially since I just finished my second martini.

When I was working with lasers and film we had had a joke, "Here, let me check the laser with my one good eye..."

I probably have 20 or more of these. I don't like constantly changing wheels. I have them in all flavors- big names & cheap HF ones & everything in-between. I like the Ryobi's because there's no safety lever or button you have to hold to trigger the tool. Important when you are running them for long periods of time. All have guards on them except 1. That one seems to always cut a finger or 2. Too EZ to get fingers under blade but sometimes, it's all that fits. That's an old Sears one.
