Just wrapping up this little project. Needed (wanted) some more room to park stuff inside.

It's 24x32 about 8 1/2' tall. Tried keep the cost low. Built on a frame of 4.5" well pipe. Built my own rafters. Still need to build the door. Total price under $5000

I built the rafters right around Thanksgiving. We had some days around 10* so I built them in my garage with the heat on. First one took about 45 minutes the rest took about 25 minutes.

The rest I worked on and off for about a week and a half.

If I was doing it again I think I would trench a footing and form a little wall with a 2x6 or something. Wouldn't have added that much cost.

I was originally planning 3 1/2" pipe but couldn't get any so went 4 1/2. That added $4-500 to the cost of pipe.

I'm still happy with the end result and since it's not a permanent structure I won't get taxed on it.

Shouldn't the siding be vertical instead of horizontal?
Hey, can't you read the title!

^That's kind of a joke. I can't seem to click the button for smilies.

In all seriousness, running the tin vertical is more conventional. But that takes more lumber since you need girts. Really the only downside to running it horizontal is the corners don't seal up as well.

I'm glad you were willing to call me out. I was going to be pretty disappointed if no one questioned my building practices! In the end it's all about what you want out of a building.

I did get my door built and hung a week or so ago. I ordered my tin about 6" shorter than the door ended up. Whoops. I just used a cutoff from a wall to fill the gap.

I welded in this salvaged piece of 3" tube. Also put a tab on each side to hold the bottom of the door.

Anyone care to guesstimate the savings on this build compared to having it built? Labor is cheap, but its a darn good investment that pays dividends & appreciates.

$5000 ? Wow You did a job !
Yes, contrary to what a lot of the crowd on here will tell you a simple garage doesn't need to cost 50k or whatever.

$5000 is my material cost. I'm going to guess I have about 50hrs into it so could probably say about $1500-2000 value for labor.

If I had wanted to I think I could have done a concrete pad and improve a few details and still kept it under 10,000. I could have trenched and formed for a pad but would have to hire help to pour it.

Bert,

Can you show a picture of this frame built on top of the pipe? Did you dig down and place the pipes vertical or lay the pipe vertical?

Thanks

It seems like I never think about pictures till it's almost done. I did just go outside and take these. It's cold out there btw, I think we are up to 4 or 5 degrees.

Just a rectangle frame laying on top of the ground. I cut 45* miters and welded the corners. Then a wood wall built on top. There is nothing in the ground other than the red anchors that you see in the picture.

Just thought I would update. Last night we had some bad thunderstorms. Wind gusts between 65-100 mph were reported around the area. Shed is still there and didn't move an inch.

Lots of trees and branches down. In some cases entire trees uprooted. I've been repairing damaged electric lines all morning and have a few more to do.

I had some big branches down but fairly little damage.

Good to hear there was no damage - Iowa weather has been pretty crazy these last few years.
