Hey guys,

I have been casually looking for a vise for a little bit, but have had no luck with anything coming up in my area. Last night I found this Peter wright vise. Here is the info on it. 1860-1880 Peter wright vise. 120lbs.

They are asking $700 CAD. Is this worth picking up? What should I offer? I'm really not sure and have little anvil knowledge.

Thanks
Jarrett

The market ***** for buyers right now. Great for sellers.

100 poundish can fetch 3 bux a pound, 200 poundish + can fetch 4 bux a pound.

That being said, I have beat many bushes and have only come across 2 anvils for cheap, both which I bought. A Trenton 250# for $220, and a Trenton 200# for less than $100.

I wouldn't pay $700 for 120#. I'd pay $300 if your market *****, you really wanted it, and not much goes on there...like you live in the middle of nowhere type thing. Luckily, here in SoCal there are many people which equals many tools out in the wild.

If you have a small car, you could drive a long ways for a less costly anvil and gas/time would still outweigh the high price of this one.

EDIT: might as well buy off ebay and have the thing shipped right to your door. Here's an ended auction. 120# for $375 + 83 s/h. And this wasn't some fluke price either....http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEAUTIFUL-1...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

all ended PW Anvil listings....http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=peter+wright+anvil&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

Okay thanks for the information, that's kind of what I was looking for. I was more drawn to it because it was the first decent sized anvil that has come up since I started looking. I may offer 300. But just keep looking if they don't take the offer. Now I have a better idea of cost per lb. Thanks guys I knew you could help.

Haha I just picked up a vise this morning and have been looking up restoring it. Too many tools not enough space in my brain. Sorry about that

lol. no worries. Vises and anvils are like apple pie and vanilla ice cream anyway. They just go together.

Jurt: you might want to put your area in your GJ profile so we know what part of the world you live in. i'm guessing the NE US or maybe Canada with the snow on the ground.

the weight stamping doesn't look quite the same as the PW's that I've owned and sold. i sold my last 3 PW's in the 100-150 range for $400-600 to some happy future blacksmiths because if treated well in the last 100 years those are some of the nicest user anvils made. i'm not a blacksmith and only a fan of old US and English steel, but i listen and have learned what the users like.

your anvil owner is fishing and before i bought that one at any price i'd check to see if those stamps are authentic (Anvils of America book is great source if you know somebody that owns one). also want to see if the rebound is better than average.

here's a few of my PW's stampings for your review and as you can see a bit different. how did you age the anvil or did you take the owner's word for it? what is it's history?

if you were close to me i'm sure i'd have a vise to send you home with after we made a fair deal and i'm sure there are probably members in your part of the country that would do the same. some of us tend to buy everything to save it from an ill fate and then only keep what we really like.
