Info on a Jacobs Chuck

I went to an estate sale today, and they had a xcelite nutdriver set that I wanted, but you had to buy the box of junk to get it.

I was about to toss the rest in the trash, but I found a “Jacobs Chuck” in it. I know its a drill chuck, but is it worth anything? It works like new, and is in near mint condition.

Its marked No. 32 CAP o-3/8, Hartford Conneticuit, United States of America.

Thanks.

Jacobs chucks are awesome, generally regarded as pretty high end.

And if it's in good condition, I'd say you did well.

Nice chuck, an older No. 32 "heavy duty" model with a No. 2 JT (Jacobs Taper) mounting. While its worth something, I doubt there is a lot of demand for a HD 3/8 capacity chuck. I'd be willing to trade for it, as I have an older DP that chuck would fit.

See lower table on page 4 of 1986 Jacobs catalog:

Imo the Super Ball Bearing chuck line by Jacobs is where the coin is at.

Also imo, that's a decent average chuck.

Well its good to know what I have, but I dont have a press to use it on.

Im still happier about the Xcelite driver set I picked up. Pretty nice for a compact tool set.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Don't necessarily need a press for that - a lot of these were fit on hand drills as well.

And yes, they're awesome chucks. I'd throw it up on the for sale board here, I bet it would be gone pretty quick.

Or hang onto it in case you have a cheapy Chinese chuck on something that decides to go DOA and replace it with this quality American product.

Need to know the mounting thread or taper to know where it can be used. Drills use threaded mounts, while drill presses/mills/lathes generally use tapered mounts

Dang, that set is $$$ at the local electronics supply house!

I might have to go through my stash of used Jacobs chucks. I converted several drills over to keyless chucks but saved the old ones. Maybe I have some of the nice ones?

Nice set. Well worth picking through that bunch of junk for $5.00, especially with the Jacobs chuck included.

I have that same set somewhere (I'll have to dig them out). I mainly use Xcelite drivers in a rack now.

Agreed. I have a few NOS Jacobs in my junk box and doubt they have much use in contemporary tools.

I just bought a NOS Jacobs 13mm chuck through my tool guy cheap. Its packaged under the UK Draper label. Not sure if its a ball bearing one or not, stock no: 58598. I was hoping to fit it too one of my air drills but not sure if that's possible or not.

Unless the lighting is really poor, it doesn't like like new to me. Looks like there is a decent amount of surface rust. Reference exmaxima1 pics for condition of "like new"

I think he is using the Craigslist definition of "like new".

Perhaps “new” wasnt the right word. What I meant by it was the functionality was like new, its butter smoothe and not a nick in it. Visual wise its old looking.
