I have a heater in my shop that I've never seen run before that I would love to use on these cold days to get a little heat so I can feel my hands out there.

All I know is that this heater was put in the shop by my grandpa a very long time ago and converted to propane, my dad is no longer able to work in the shop so it's up to me now. It's got a mouse nest in it right now so I'll have to pull it down and get that mess all cleaned up, but does anyone else have any information or things to check so that I don't go burning down my shop?

I'd have to pull it down for a model number, since the air compressor is sitting directly below it. I have no idea how much use it's seen, but it hasn't been used at all in the last 12 years for sure.

I'm a little worried about it since there was just a shop fire at a farm I worked for 2 years ago. Haven't gotten any word yet, but It sounds like it might be a total loss.

Drisco, you answered your own question. Invest in a new unit that is properly vented. The pictured unit's flue pipe look's to go through the buildings wood.

It's not a condensing furnace, when gramp's put that in there realy was no code for gas appliance installation. There are clearences to combustables for a reason.

I agree with 39 the vent pipe touching the wood won't pass any current codes especially insurance.other than that do a full inspection might be good but not very efficient $$$ compared to the newer ones. I am using a Old electric one similar to that just to take the chill off because you can sure see the meeter spin $$$$$
