Man, you guys need to move.

I live in the historic district of a small Georgia town... very safe... my kids play outside alone... it's just that Crime is everywhere... it's especially bad when you get these tweakers that are only worried about getting their next fix and not who they're hurting to get it.

It really is ridiculous to suggest killing people for damage to a garage door, worse still to consider murdering them and secreting the bodies.

Securing, alarming and insuring one's property is the very basic level to attain.

There have always been thieves, however, the methods to counter them have improved greatly, as has the information available to do so.

Countless millions of people have learned how to protect their property without recourse to killing potential thieves, some of the posters on this thread should consider doing the same.

Californians should stay in Cali. Frankly, I'm sick of Californians and New Yorkers and (insert your bankrupt state's name here) coming to my state because they're sick of crime, lax law enforcement, onerous taxes, potholed roads and all of the other things that come from tax and spend governments that have no regard for common sense.

The problem is that they hate how their states are run but when they come here, they continue to vote like they're Californian because they somehow can't make the connection between their vote and the fact that their states are wrecked.

Don't turn my little slice of heaven into California. If you hate it there, change it.

Thats the reason I moved out of Denver 13 years ago, 30,000 people from California alone were moving in to Denver every month, they made the cost of living so high you couldnt buy even a small house, the roads were over-crowded, it took over 6 hours to renew a driving liscense.

Calirado is now just as bad as California. 20 million new laws to save you from yourself.

Can you get in trouble for electrifying your own property? Like if a photo-electic eye is breached it shoots a tazer or two at the person entering the garage. That would also make great youtube videos if you had surveillance as well. Just a thought.

I grew up out in SE Portland Or. and thwarted thieves on a few occasions. That same neighborhood is really bad now.
We are on private acres across town now and if I had the draw on a burglar I would probably put him down. It may or may not get reported based on said individual's disposition. BTW, I have vacant horse stalls, a chainsaw and a tractor.

Basically...it's called a booby trap.....and a felony in all states....even Texas and AZ.

Not sure why everyone is down on California....I left Texas 25 years ago....and your never going to get me back there.

I don't worry about the day to day drama....what the news tells you and what really happens are two different things.

Oklahoma ***** too, Hot, cold, windy, dry, tornadoes, ice, rednecks, cowboys, Indians, you name it, I think it you should stay where you are. As far a criminals; thiefs, murderers, molesters, and such, I have no use for and you can expand that statement as far as you like. As far as calling, killing a thief murder, that is a term I would not apply. Weeding a flower bed same difference.

We come there because the weather ***** here. My neighbors here in NY (a red county by the way ) have owned property there since the 70's when there was nothing there. I also hear of way more trouble in all these so called
wannabe tough guy states than what we have here, maybe the dirtbags know we have way more fire power or tougher dudes here . Charles Bronson was from NY ya know!

Re electrictyfing your property: Yes, all state have "booby trap" or "trap gun" laws. People used to rig a gun to go off if someone broke in, usually put in unoccupied houses. In one infamous case in SC, a boy was killed after he broke down 3 doors to get to the room where the gun was and the owner was held liable.

But on the invisible light trip, I don't see why it wouldn't be legal to set it up to trigger pepper spray, after all AFIK that or similar items are sold over the counter.

Yeah shoot somebody stealing out of your garage/shed.... spend the rest of your life in prison over personal belongings

Install the good alarm system, keep up on your insurance policy, and live life.

I'm not condoning it, but there locales where you can be perfectly within your rights to shoot a burglar, or even someone committing criminal mischief.

Interesting how the majority of responses favoring non-violence against thieves are coming from posters in California or outside the US. Hmmmm.
I was just about to comment on that myself when I read your post. Folks in CA seem to have been conditioned to be good law abiding passive little victims. This country is becoming more and more divided as far as regional ways of thinking. Where I come from catching someone stealing something I worked hard to get is going to result in a severe beating and the local sherrif will ask me how many times the guy "fell down" while he laughs and hauls the guy to jail. No stupid lawsuit by the thief, no liberal ******** trying to figure out why the poor criminal turned out the way he did because his mama didn't coddle him enough, etc. Firing a warning shot over their heads is perfectly acceptable and it's a lesson to the crooks buddies that they might want to look for a more passive "victim" the next time they are looking for things to steal. Please take no offense but sometimes I think the country would be better off if CA would break off and float into the Pacific ocean and become a country all it's own.

It was obvious to me since I live in SoCal. It's illegal to discharge a firearm in the city or county even if you are protecting yourself or your property. That's just the way the cops work around here.

It's a hell of a lot easier to lose the wire and have to fix the door than to lose your gun and pay the attorney's fees. Just his gun (if he has one) will cost more than the damage. You shoot one around here and you will never see it again.

This is the way in most of the highly populated areas of the country. You cowboys that hunt on your own property are only the majority in very rural areas. You won't make it in the city.

Why do we live here? Well, we used to make good money in the city. Easily 40 an hour for being in the trades. I don't hear much 40/hr in the Midwest plains.
Sorry my friend but my peace of mind and quiet, trouble free way of life is not for sale to the highest bidder. I thoroughly enjoy being able to sit on my front porch here in the TN mountains all day and watch absolutely nothing happen. We have been here over a year and I have not once heard the sound of sirens, seen a police car drive by, worried about whether or not I remembered to lock my door, etc. My nearest neighbor is far enough away that I can't see his house from here and when I build my garage I don't need to mess with zoning, sweet talking the neighbors so they don't whine, or any of that silly **** that goes on in the city. Car insurance for an 02 S10 and an 01 Buick Century that are both too old to bother with collision is $35 a month for BOTH vehicles. My 67 Camaro & the wifes Corvette both have antique plates that cost $35 to register and it's a one time fee and the plates are good for as long as we own those cars. No state inspections, no emissions inspections and no state income tax. My property tax is $350 a year. Your $40 an hour won't buy this kind of life... I do have nozy neighbors though.. They watch every moooove I make. Here's the ones next door.. The building in the background is an old barn that's owned by a man who lives 2 towns away. These are also his cows. In the 14 months I've been here I've seen him twice. :D Yeah it really ***** here.. tell everyone you know to stay out of Tennessee...

Texas and surrounding states saw an influx of incoming folks from Katrina. While the honest ones were fine, not all of them were/are as honest as one would hope. :willy_nil

@NHBandit, I've lived back there for one year. Got to experience the 4 seasons. And lightening. Summer humidity and winter ice was enough to send me home. But, if I could have adjusted to that, I would have never adjusted to the mosquitoes. Went to the short track one Sat night and people had mosquito candles in the grandstands. Of course enough of them were smoking cigarettes that I wonder if there wasn't enough smoke to drive off the bugs.

I was on a construction crew of 12. Over a Thanksgiving weekend we lost 4 of them to some kind of drunk driving incident. One was paralyzed. The others just didn't have a car anymore to come to work. That **** went on constantly.

Every woman I talked to had 2 thoughts: babies and baking. None of them knew what an avocado was. The mayor of the town was in jail, the state representative was being investigated and the governor was under indictment. There were 2 types of men: church going that would cheat you out of your last dollar and ones that started the day with a 24 oz Mountain Dew, a pack of smokes and a bag of chips. Pretty soon that yielded to a 12 pack, more chips and more smokes (although I could buy into a couple of those beers; I had to).

Sorry, I ran back to my troubled city to find sanity.

It's all relative.

This thread is about theft. I saw plenty of that in the SE states. No place is immune.

A lady I used to work with has a "victim" mentality. We were talking about personal protection one day and I mentioned that I would have no problem shooting an intruder to protect my kids. She said that she would just hide out in her bedroom and wait for someone to help her.

Meh. If you don't like CA, then stay away. Unless you want to get away from your crappy weather and enjoy our sunshine. Just make sure you spend lots of money and then go home.

I love CA. Have lived in the Southeast. Didn't like it. Too boring.

I wonder if defending yourself and your family is known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects.

Maybe. I'm also confident that the 9th Circuit would hold that defending yourself would disenfranchise the criminal and be a violation of his civil rights.:lol_hitti
