I just recently purchased (used) this Cornwell rebranded IR 232c. It seems to act how it is intended, but doesn't really have any "balls."

Here is this beauty disassembled

I took it apart, cleaned it up(got rid of a good bit of grit that was mixed in with the grease) re-greased and oiled it. That seemed to give it more power. It can take the lugs off of some cars, but struggles with the dealership tightened lugs on my bmw.

Any ideas of what I could do if anything to solve this problem?
Rebuild kit?
Lost cause?

Thanks in advance.

Have you used other impacts on your air setup? If not it might not be getting enough air.

Maybe leave the walls alone and do something to put a smooth edge on the vanes or just get a rebuilt kits with all the seals new vanes.

Ok, I've got a 40 gallon compressor with 3/8ths hose so I would expect that to be sufficient, but I could be wrong.

You might be on to something Danglerb, this impact doesn't have any seals/gaskets on it, so I may be missing a few parts (presumably due to an improper rebuild before).

you need to take it apart more. theres a paper gasket that seals the rear of the motor to the housing. the paper gasket is usually what fails.

Thanks! I don't mean to sound foolish, but how do you properly disassemble the motor housing?

With the back cover removed, you should be able to remove the rotor and housing by simply pulling them out by hand.

You should be getting enough air. What psi is you regulator set at?

its a tight fit. use some pliers to grab on to the rotor shaft and work it side to side while pulling it out.

Thanks.

I have the regulator set at 100 psi. I guess I could bump it up to around 140, but I didn't know if that was ok on the gun.

The regulator set to 100 psi is probably only giving you 80-90 at the impact due to friction losses in the hose. I'd jack it up to 110 or so.

You might fab a T fitting with a gauge at the tool to see what you are really getting. Possibly the hose has an obstruction, inner liner has come lose and is blocking the hose, etc.

(at work we have smart a$$es who will take foam ear plugs and roll them up and stuff them in the air ******* of hoses. The air gets thru slowly, first pull of the trigger you get a good blast, then it quickly dies)

IIRC the pressure drop for 50' of 3/8" hose at typical impact CFM is around 15psi. So 100psi static won't be giving you the required 90psi at the gun. Try adjusting the reg with the gun running until you're up around 105psi.
