Have some questions for GJ Sparky's & compressor gurus . . .

FACTS:
. . . . Ingersol Rand T30 compressor w/ 3 ph 1 HP Dayton motor
. . . . (actually is V23A model # compressor) - - - see PIC's

a) What recommended VFD to keep compressor intact running 3 ph ??
. . .(208-220v / 440v) . . (0.4-3.4A / 1.714-4.2A / 2.1A)
b) What single phase motor would maximize output of compressor ??
c) What is CFM output of compressor . . . . As Is ?? . . . & . . Maximum ??

Would hope to run this on 120v to be my "medium" size compressor.
d) Would 20A circuit on 120v handle maximum setup for compressor output ??

e) If needed to be 240v circuit, what wire and breaker needed ??

f) Finally, anyone have this V23A version of IR T30 compressor ?? Any good ??

^ ^ Thanks for reply. No it's NOT the Ebay listing.

Also wondering what is typical cutoff pressure that this compressor would build ??

Not sure what "Vacuum Pump" means . . . is this compressor for other purposes than normal ??

Vacuum pump means it creates negative pressure, not positive. Vacuum pumps are used to create suction. Used to operate vacuum presses, hold wooden items to lathe chucks, in medical applications, to evacuate HVAC systems, etc.

What is the gauge on your unit graduated in? PSI or In Hg?

Don't want to dispute your claim as too not being the eBay listing, but the edges of the motor nameplate have the same exact distress marks. The pictures show the exact braided connection hose, the exact stains on the belt guarding, etc. The replacement Dayton motor is the same as well, too coincidental.

The pictures are too similar not to be the same item, are your pictures of the actual item you have or copies from the internet? Maybe a Craigslist add?

Were you to get it my free advice would be to pickup a 1hp 56 frame foot mount motor and call it a good day.

Its possible it came with a 1 hp. Usually vacuum compressors have a huge pump and a small motor combo compared with positive compressors. For instance I used to work on vacuum rotary screws and they had huge air ends with small hp motors compared to their positive pressure counterpart.

A VFD is not going to like GFCI protected circuits, or should write it that a GFCI is going to trip when a VFD is plugged in, so a 1 HP 120V input drive is not going to be that useful, 1 1/2 HP is top end for a 20A 120V circuit, if the OP is going to buy the compressor swapping out the motor for a single phase one makes the most sense to me.

Its a vacuum cleaner, not a leaf blower...

^ ^ ^ Yeah, and it's likely not much of a Leaf Blower !! :D

Not the Ebay compressor as one I'm looking at is elsewhere in Oklahoma !! ;)

If a 2 HP or 3 HP single phase motor would "transform" this ugly duckling into a beautiful goose, that's what I'm curious about - - - ie change direction and CREATE pressure like a normal air compressor.

Potential buy is only in $125 or so range. Single phase low HP motor won't be much.

So guru's . . . can this be transformed ???

Why don't you spend some time on the Ingersoll Rand website and research what this pump is to help yourself better understand what it's rated for. I already did that and gave you the specs about this pump. Why did you include the pictures you did if that's not the unit you are talking about? Very misleading and not related to your question.

I guess some guru can wave a magic wand and this will turn into the "you ****" post that you want it to be.

Sorry to to sound like a jerk, but I spent considerable time researching this in an effort to help you. I'm not getting the feeling you are willing to do the same.

From my limited understanding on the subject I Dont think a larger motor will do anything to increase the pumping capacity.

Pumps are designed to compress (or vacuum) at a certain RPM. That RPM equates to a certain number of strokes per minute and thus how much it will pump.

A higher HP motor will still need to run at the same RPM as the pump is designed to run at. So More HP WONT increase the compression or vacuum amount.

Please correct me if Im wrong.

A 1HP, 115V motor draws 16 Amps. If you multiply by 1.25 as required = 20 Amps.

I should have been more clear that a 1.5 HP cord & plug connected is the max that one could get away with. Any larger will result in a lot of tripped breakers.

^ ^ ^ That's just it, the Ingersol Rand website just does not have much at all about that older V23A vacuum pump. I did scour their website and Google around without finding much.

http://www.ingersollrandproducts.co...ll-reciprocating-air-compressors/vacuum-pumps

You keep harping that this "IS" the Ebay item and . . . SURE didn't think it was since Ebay was Florida and auction I was watching was Oklahoma !! That Ebay listing looked to be **** anyway as NoOne would pay $1,195 for a used 1 HP compressor of any kind. :eyecrazy: I suppose only explanation is that Florida seller on Ebay gave up the ghost on selling at astronomical price, and gave to GovLiquidation to sell in Oklahoma, if indeed it's the exact same V23A compressor.
. . . . . AND . . . . You are RIGHT !! It's the exact same serial number on the pump !! :eyecrazy:
Both have same Serial Number - - - - - 30T - 862482 . . . . crazy from $1,195 to $121 !! :eyecrazy:

Here is the "little gem" . . . only at $121 so far in OKC:
http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=11639185&convertTo=USD

My main question was whether a "vacuum pump" can be switched over to be a normal compressor . . . and in particular what that little T30 can do.

Thus, now with definitive education from fellow GJer's . . . I now know that vacuum pump is ONLY that . . . a sucker !!!

You would not change the direction of the motor.
You simply switch the connections on the head.
The question remains; are there any other differences between a vacuum pump and a compressor pump.
In theory no, but I could see the engineers making differences in the valves or rings to optimize the operation.

When you think about it the compressor has to deal with a high in-out differential and a little blow-by is insignificant, where as a vacuum pump only deals with a 15 PSI (at most) in-out differential, but any leakage (rings, valves, etc.) is significant.

Close, the eBay seller was hoping to flip it for big bucks. You don't "give" to GovLiquidation to sell, they only sell government surplus IIRC.

Eureka, there is no explanation that fits this thread is there? That poor guy had to take that great compressor all the way from Florida to Oklahoma just to get his money back. That just "*****" for him, too bad you couldn't "pressure" him into selling it to you at a lower price than that silly $121. This thread just proves that "suckers" are born every day.

My bet is he hoped to "sell" it on ebay and only then buy it From Gov Auctions.

We need someone from IR recip division to tell us if there are any differences between the compressor and vacuum T30 pumps.

It if is the same, or only needs a few parts changed, it might be worth the $121.

I understand the question and the interest for interests sake I guess so this doesn't apply to the OP but no better place to put it than here as it sort of relates.
Today would spend way more time shopping than building and get just what I wanted cheaper and faster.
It doesn't always turn out bad and for some people building is the way to go, I do it some, I repair and repair parts more than "rebuild" but some of the big wasters I have done is waiting or starting off on the wrong foot.
I don't remember everyones details but the OP seems like the kind of a guy should look around and find just the right thing on the used market if he cares about a 1 shot deal maybe but get a plug and play 3 to 5 hp 2 stage and be done with it, just dun fukkin around. Guys seem to spend eternity making up for a **** compressor. I am not talking about Jack Olsen who has just what he needs and doesn't have to endlessly fiddle with it but to guys who limp this for a long time.
Compulsively worry about the piping and loss thru every fitting forever because they really have the wrong compressor. There is a difference between a better one and the right one, not always the same.
It seems there was some conclusion about a couple cheap 2 stage that looked pretty appealing, I cant recall all the models as to which is which but have a Bud bought a used Cman 30 yrs ago, 5 hp alum thingy with a Marathon motor, had 1 or 2 minor problems and an oil change and still works just the same as it always did. It let him do the work with a simple air hose and we run it to 175.
Myb own may be down a little but I don't care and it doesn't matter. I am all for economy tools but there are some in this class that would be well served by a mechanics compressor which is 3 hp 2 stage.
If you want to do real body work then a 5 is for you but I can or could have phase conversion and all that stuff if I wanted and don't. I like simple and really don't own anything that would overload a 10 wire. The market is too fluid to make do. If power co0nversion and all the tech is a hobby then this can be disregarded but if the idea is to do something with the tool aint nothing better than a factory designed wire it up application. Sure I could build a welder too but the cost and all the time would make it impractical compared to the DC buzzer and even 2x as much when you can buy it for 1/2 what it cost new. Use it todauy and it works like it should.

I have a bud who does cars, 2 car garage and snowmobile **** too. Big tool box and a used 2 cyl 20 gal portable Sears comp with a cord and a 25 ft hose. It works and he is fine with it, he is a master mechanic and then some.
If we are investing in complex piping and every ideal fitting we are kind of shooting ourselves in the foot for a 400$ compressor. A little like the 120V mig, buy all the other stuff and short 300 on the machine that gives it so much more reach, 2x as much.
A guy can do work with any of it. This is stuff I learned the hard way. But I see a lot of pipe up size and even loops, lots of effort to save a pinch that one cant really ever overcome. Not only is there no replacement for displacement neither is there for pressure. I see they are trying to stretch the singles to 150 but they are really going to be squeaking it out.

The GovLiq auction ended with Buyer paying $270 . . . plus the 12.5% buyer's premium.

Guess that's what a "Sucker" compressor goes for !! :D
