Ingersoll Kohler 2475 question??

I have had this gasoline compressor sitting around, it starts great, runs great, and the air idler is working fine. The pilot/unloader is a little fiddly but I can get it to activate the idler in the "UP" position.

My question is, when it hits cutoff pressure and idles, what stops the machine from continuing to build air pressure?

Also, should the pilot be DOWN and the idler deactivated when starting? Seems like the pilot would have to be UP when running for the idler to function.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The unloader should be in the position it's in in your picture for normal operation. Flipping it vertical is for staying the machine while under pressure because it allows constant unloading. I can't tell from the picture, but there are two common air compressor unloaders. One that opens up and and directly vents the pressure before the tank check valve. The other type operates a pilot valve that runs an unloader in the compressor head.

Thanks, farmerbrooks, thats what I thought, too, I can hear it unload when its in the UP position. What confused me is that the idler also engages in the UP position, seems like if I flip it down and the throttle runs wide open it defeats its own purpose?

Is this machine designed to just keep running and blow off the air pressure it makes after a certain psi?

It should throttle up till it reaches its set pressure then idle down and unload. However if it's been sitting I've seen them stick, so a little lubrication in the inlet and on the throttle linkage would help. The unloaders are adjustable for cut in and cut out pressure, but I don't that will be necessary.

In the past I've just taken the line off that comes from the compressor head and just put some light oil in there.
