Have had this compressor about 10 years. Works great until the motor started smoking today and shut down. I don't really know where to start with this. I removed the capacitors, no leaks, and ohms tested to infinity. I saw a small flame inside the housing before it shut itself off. Is it time to order a new motor? Thanks.

I have same compressor. Sounds like windings shorted out. Have it checked but my guess is you'll need a new motor. Emerson motors are relatively cheap and widely available on eBay etc. Want to match HP/volts/amps/phase/rpm and shaft diameter or you might need new pulleys and belts etc. I looked into upgrading my motor with a Baldor but it was pretty expensive..

In most major cities there are motor rewinding services that might be able to redo you're motor. That way nothing needs to be fudged.

Yes, it's worth asking but I haven't heard of a motor shop that'll take in small motors like this in many years.

What few motor shops are left, only deal with the big commercial stuff.

However every area can be different.
