I have heard about Emerson motors causing issues on IR compressors so I went to Lowes to see what was on them. I am looking for a 60 gallon SS3 or SS5.

Anyone hear of issues with US Motors? Looks like they are part of Nidec.

I never heard of any issues with them. In fact it think all motors are the same. I don't care where it was made, a motor is a motor and design wise, there is not too much deviation throughout the market. I'd just buy the cheapest one that get the job done that you need it to get done. feel free to reply

I have a Mexican made 7½ Emerson on my Husky compressor and it has worked fine for ten years now. Never heard of any problems with Emerson motors.

Nidec is a Japanese based electric motor company that also bought Emerson about two years ago. I'll bet the Mexican made US Motors motor on that compressor was made in the same factory with my Mexican made Emerson motor.

That motor is fine. Keep in mind that it costs 50% of the price of a new machine to get a new motor or a new compressor (pump), and I-R is the only place to get them. There are no spare parts for the bare compressor other then a valve rebuild kit. It is a "throw it away and get a new one" type of machine, much like most of the other compressors in this class from most manufacturers.

Depending on your budget and planned use of the machine you might want to consider an upgrade. You can get the 2340L5 for ~30% more which includes a cast-iron compressor pump that can be rebuilt over and over again.

Unfortunately that is about the top of my budget. I was planning on spending about $500 but have pushed my budget to the $800 60 gallon 5HP SS5 at Tractor Supply. It is about $180 more than the 3HP SS3. I don't need a 2 stage set up and I have no plans for anything besides engine work and filling tires. I can't imagine a situation that I would need to run a sander or anything. I think either will have enough CFM for me so I am mainly wanting the 5HP for the faster recovery time.

I can't find a Quincy that I can afford and all the other brands are not full cast iron. Seems like these IR units are about the best I can afford. I've been watching craigslist but haven't seen anything and I actually need a compressor for an engine teardown.

I actually found a used 2340L5 on Craigslist for $625 but by the time I called it was gone. :(

I was pretty much in the same boat you are back in 2007 when I bought the 5hp IR. Haven't had any problems with it, but like you it's just for occasional automotive work, blow'n off a mill & lathe.

I've got the same motor on my IR 80 gal comp. Same part # but mine says Emerson. Nothing about US Motors or Nidec. I wonder if Nidec bought Emerson? Anyhow, I've had it since 2006 and my hour meter says 73 hours. That only counts run time. Never had an issue with it.
