I have a lead on an IR model 2475 compressor (pump only) so I’ve been searching old threads for anything related to IR compressors. Much has been written about the decline in quality of the T30 series compressor, including the fact that most are made in India now. From what I understand the basic T30 design has been the same forever so at first glance I assumed the reliability issues must be related to manufacturing and not the basic design. When I looked a little deeper I found that IR is spinning the living daylights out of these pumps, some running as high as 1500 rpm. This got me wondering if IR has rerated these pumps over the years for higher and higher output, and the reliability issues are simply related to pushing them to the max. For example the 2475 is rated at 17 cfm at 1000 rpm or 24 cfm at 1500 rpm. It just stands to reason, the pump is going to last a heck of a lot longer at 1000 rpm than at 1500. And 50 years ago I wonder if the same pump might have been rated at something like 700 rpm? I grew up around gas stations with old compressors like this and sure don’t remember any of them screaming at 1500 rpm.
