Anyone have experience or share an opinion on these? On sale at Sears for $1200 canadian.

I'd use it as my main shop compressor to power air files, wizzers and wrenches.

Yeah stay away for it, I have an 80 gal 11 hp peak/5hp one and so far the motor caught fire (google emerson motor problems) and the switch burned out of it, now it's leaking where the pipe comes out of the tank and goes into the head.
heres a few links that are good reads

Just make sure of what type of motor is on it.

I have the SS5N5 which is a 5hp unit with an 80 gallon tank and pumps out over 18 cfm. Couldn't be more pleased with it! Never runs out of air and can run my sandblaster all day long. Probably the last compressor I'll ever buy.

I think Sears made a mistake on their stats. That looks like a SS5L5 that makes 18.1 cfm. In any case, save yourself a couple hundred bucks and get it from Northern Tool for $899 with free shipping.....................

I have the 3 Hp ss3 60 gallon ingersoll, just got it about 2 months ago and am happy so far, plenty of air for a 1 man shop. I would go with a 5hp if more than one person will be using air tools.

Stay away! As already noted they have motor issues. The motors are known to catch fire and also known to have cheap caps on them. Mine had a start capacitor go up and IR was not at all cooperative. They kept telling me it was caused by me having bad power run to the machine (BS!) and that I was a month out of warranty so the only thing they would do was sell me a new motor for $550 plus shipping. Then when I mentioned that I bought their maintenance kit which says it doubles your warranty they told me that applies to the compressor head only.

i was hoping to pick up the 60 gal IR compressor from northern tools, Im in the middle of wiring up my garage.

Does the 60 gal IR comp need to be " hardwired " or does it have a 220 plug on it?

If it just comes with the wireharness, is it possible to just throw a 220 plug on it to fit a receptacle?

I have one and although it has worked well for me I keep waiting for it to catch fire like the rest of them seem to do. I had a head gasket blow, it was under warranty and they promptly sent the parts but I had to make the repair (very easy) since they had no local service reps.
If I was buying today, I would buy as much Quincy as my budget allowed and never look back.

BTW, Northern tool has the best deal on shipping. I kept waiting for them to call and tell me I was outside their free shipping zone or some bull **** but it didn't happen and it was free shipping.

As far as I know, the consensus is that IR used to make very good compressors, but the quality plummeted after they oursourced manufacturing to India.
