I have been a member for a number of years now. Back in my single days it was trying to research how to upgrade my 24x30 shop. But about 5 years ago I got married and I sold that house. The wife and I tried to find somewhere outside of town with some acreage, but we ended up finding a really nice house in town. The downside..... no shop. I've made a 2 car garage work in the past, but now I got to share it with a wife and a step son. No bueno. :D

So.... after 5 years of working on project after project, I convinced the keeper of the money that I could really use a shop. It helped that she was sick of seeing project car after project car tie up the driveway and 1/2 of he attached garage was filled with welders and shelves and such. I convinced her that we could afford and hard the room for a 24x24 detached garage. I was working on the plans for a new garage when I ended up over at the neighbors chatting. They had a nice garage next to their house. I was asking the husband what size it was and we were measuring it when the wife came up and said "Hey you just need to buy this garage". I assumed she was kidding, but we talked about it before and they were thinking of building something larger to house their new boat and other toys. The garage was 20x24x8. Nothing fancy, but it was built int he 80's and was overhauled with new windows, siding, overhead door and paint in 2015. We struck a deal for $2000. Now I was saddled with trying to move a building. :scared:

It all started with taking down and selling the 8x10 poly shed we had and getting a pad poured.

I took down several sections of the old privacy fence to access to the pad. I ended up taking down another section later for more room to move the garage.

Luckily i had a friend in town that does concrete. He did a killer job on the pad.

I had the local gravel company bring in about 6 yards of driveway gravel to make the approach off of the alley to the pad.

Is that the new to you garage in the back ground? Looks nice. Couldn't buy or build for that price on your new pad. Keep us here at GJ posted on your moving progress. We all love pictures. I'm glad for you, lucky dog. Johnny Generic.

While the pad was curing, I was working up a plan to move the building. Thankfully it was right next door. We share the same alleyway so I just needed to pick it up and move it over to my yard, about 100 feet or so. Simple right?? :bounce:

My dad had moved a few smaller garages in the past so his expertise as well as his tractor helped a ton.

First up was a ton of bracing on the inside of the garage. We did 2X10's down each side, with 2x12's going across the garage. There were 2x12's off the backwall to brace up where the trailer didn't quite reach. Lastly there were some 2x6's that went up to the rafters.

FB_IMG_1595253074828.jpg

We started lifting the building with high lift jacks and using pallets as cribbing. Warning...... DO NOT do this. It was not very stable at all. There is a reason why professionals use bottle jacks and solid wood timbers. ;)

FB_IMG_1595253077634.jpg

But, it worked and we were able to get it up and the trailer slipped under it.

Mind you we ended up jacking the building up on the hottest day of the year. 108* heat index. Not the greatest for a bunch of big boys. lol But we got it up and ready to move the next morning.

This was the moment I about puked. I measured 6 ways from Sunday before all of this, but I never once thought to take into account the eves sticking out. I was stuck.

Thankfully I have understanding neighbors (they sat on the deck and watched the entire weekend) and they let me take down their chain link fence to get the extra clearance I needed to get past the guide wires on the power pole.

We got it jockeyed into position and were able to extract the trailer and set the building down.

I need to grab some updated pictures this week. It has been about 3 weeks since the move. The first week I worked on anchoring the building to the pad and removing all of the bracing. Then I started work on ripping out the old electrical and putting in all new since it only had a small 100A panel and it was on the wrong end of the building anyways.

This past weekend the electrician was out and installed a new, bigger sub panel while I trenched to the building. He hooked it all up and I now have power to the shop. I will grab some more pictures and detail the electrical setup in the next few days.

Thanks. I sold the wife on a garage and set myself a budget of $7000. After the electrical and I bought epoxy for the floor I am at about $7000. I wont have the funds to insulate and sheet the walls right away, but thanks to a donation from one of my dads rentals I have a nearly new window A/C unit to install so I will at least be able to work comfortably.

For those wondering, I am a car guy. I love working on classic cars, mainly performance cars. I have owned several drag race cars and street cars over the years. I have been working out of the driveway for the past 5 years and it stinks. lol

I tore down and blasted this 62 Ford Fairlane for my brother.

I also have a 65 Mustang that was my highschool car that I ended up selling to my brother recently (to get the money for the garage actually).

I also bought a 99 Cobra that I am going to do a Coyote motor swap on and have as a daily driver before too long.

The wiring is now in and mostly complete. I still need to mount and wire up an outlet for the window A/C as well as buy and install 1 220V outlet (box is there and wiring ran though). I did a bit of cleanup and next up will be emptying the garage out to prep the floors for epoxy.

Nice job on the move! I'll suggest cutting an opening and framing around it for the A/C unit. Wire it in, and forget it. Having functional windows not half-plugged with a 'window-rattler' is a nice feature.

Yep, that is the plan. The window unit is bigger than the windows anyways. I am waiting on it to be delivered to take some measurements and figure out exactly where I want to put it.

I'm residing my workshop and putting in new windows . After putting the windows in, I decided that I hated putting the window shaker back in it and opened up and framed for the A/C.

Tip - look for an A/C meant for mounting in a sliding window , they're taller and narrower than a regular unit..depending on stud spacing, you may be able to avoid cutting a stud..

I was initially hoping to afford a mini split system, but I don't have that money right now. The window A/C unit I am getting was out of one of my dad's rental houses. It is about 4 years old, but was only used for 2 months. He has had it sitting in his way in his shop about 3 hours away. I am pretty sure it is a normal sized (big) unit. I am sure I will have to so some frame work. But where I am thinking of putting it, there is already some cobbled together framing so I will have the chance to fix those issues at the same time.

I spent Friday night emptying the garage out and then on Saturday I rented a floor grinder and went at it.

20200815_152623.jpg

Sunday I went out and ran some sealer on the joint from the baseboard and concrete. I also bought some concrete joint filler and ran a bead on the cut lines. All of that should be cured by tonight. Run the shop vac around the floor and then hopefully tonight I will be able to put down my first coat of epoxy!

Great story on the move! When you reinstalled the fence were you able to use the old posts and fencing after digging new holes?

I recognized the 62 Fairlane since my father had a 63. Subtle changes between the 62,63 and 64s model years.

We did end up breaking off one rusted out post. Had to dig out the base, but luckily enough he had 3 others with concrete sitting next to the shed. Had to dig a little deeper, but we got out of it without having to buy a thing. :)

The 62 is definitely the red headed step child of the Fairlanes of that era, but I like unique. Lol

Great deal for a garage! keep us posted on your projects, too! Does moving in a pre-built garage preclude the need for a building permit?

Luckily I am in a rural small town so while I did have to pull a basic $25 permit, there really isn't any inspections or really any rules at all other than basic setback requirements.

Spent an hour with the shop vac vacuuming up the floor for dust and debris. I got the first coat down. It looks a bit weird in the picture since I had just finished right near the door and it was still wet. It looked much more even this morning. I went ahead and picked up a second coating kit and some anti slip additive for a second coat tonight.

I put on the 2nd coat last night. I mixed in some anti-slip additive in there. I was initially not going to do the color chips since I was worried about finding any dropped parts, but I decided to go ahead since I really liked the look. Since I did 2 kits of the Rustoleum Epoxy-Coat I had 4 of the bags of chips. I used almost all of them. I couldn't imagine using any less and getting an even distribution of chips by hand.

Tonight I will be swinging through Lowe's for a truck full of insulation and then by Friday the OSB will be going up. The wife and kid say I need to go with a light gray color for the walls. My default color was white, but I think a touch of color will look great (and happy wife = happy life right :D )

Another long *** weekend working on the garage. My brother came up and helped me insulate and sheet the garage. The wife and kid picked out the paint and we painted the north wall so on Sunday my brother could help again and we moved most all of the stuff out of the house garage. Its coming along. I still need to finish figuring out the window A/C wiring and get it mounted so I can finish insulating and sheeting the south wall. Then some more paint and I can work on finding a home for everything (and bringing a truck load of tools home from the storage unit).

Man you guys did a great job moving that building! I think it was a little bit of a missed opportunity though - since it's only 8' high, pouring a stem wall or even building one out of block would have gotten you another 12-18" of height which would be super helpful for a lift or any number of projects.

Looking good so far. Where is the AC going to be mounted in the wall?

It will be in the wall just past that window. I still have to nail down the exact height though.

I thought about it, but between the extra cost of the stems walls, then the cost to replace or lower the overhead door, walk in door and windows... it would have pushed it out of my budget. Plus it would have been a hard sell with the wife. Not that it didnt cross my mind. :)

Thanks. I had the wife sold on a 24x24 and we had a budget of about $7000. I am pretty confident I could have gotten the basic building up for that amount, but it would not be insulated or cooled or have the epoxy floors. I am happy to give up that extra 4 feet for those other items. I think it will be a great shop for the house.

I got more work done this last weekend. The a/c unit was mounted, wall insulated, sheeted and then painted. I started to hang up some yard tools and got the mowers in the garage. It is slowly coming together. I still need to find some shelving or maybe some takeout kitchen cabinets for more storage in the back of the garage. My goal is to keep the welding bench clear for projects. I've had to use it for storage for the last 5 years and nothing makes me more irritated than having to clear it off every time I need to use it.

I need to haul my band saw home from the storage unit so I can cut up some tubing. Then fill the argon for the tig welder and I can finally finish welding in the last few roll cage bars so I can paint and reinstall the cage in my brothers car. Then it is "Me Time" and I can bring home my 99 Cobra and start the Coyote motor swap I have been planning. It has been way too long since I have had a proper fun car to drive. :D

Don't you mean LS Turbo swap. LOL

Just messing. Be sure to keep us in the loop with the swap!

lol. Yeah that is certainly more common these days. Probably the cheaper route too, but I have most everything on hand for the Coyote swap and I really want to play with that engine combo a bit. I think it will be great for a daily driver. I wouldn't mind playing with a turbo LS on another car at some point though.

The progress on the walls and floor looks good. I see you decked on the AC location too.

Any plans or a budget for a small shed to hold the lawn equipment? Unless maybe you can stack the push mower over the rider for the time being?

Those Coyote engines LOOOOVE boost. Great numbers blowing some air through them.
