Hello all,

I'm thinking a 36 x48 x13 garage with 8/12 attic trusses will be all I need, I would like to have maybe 4 block bottom wall and then build 10' on top for a 12'8" or so when finished for a lift. So I would like you to look at he floor layout and give me opinions/advice on what's good and what's not. I'm thinking a load bearing wall down the left side to help with truss span, but that space would be storage for finished cars while having the ability to use the back half for a paint booth. Having sliding doors to isolate the welding/grinding/blasting room to keep most of the grime contained to that room.

Leaving the front open for a lift and tool boxes, cabinets, etc.

The thought on the left side storage/paint booth is....during the course of a build most of time is build time and fabrication so that room can store cars/motorcycles (be usefull ) and a small percentage of the time it will be used as a paint booth. I have tried having finished cars in the same open building as cars being worked on and the nice cars get trashed or damaged being in the same area.....so I would like to isolate on my next time around.

Tell me what you think. :) Jeff I hope it is big enough to be clear.

First of all, get some graph paper and make a scaled drawing of what you want to do. It will give you a better idea of your spaces. That being said, I know exactly what you are trying to do. Your layout is very similar to mine. My area is 40x60 but similar in concept. You do not need a load bearing wall for your 36' span, mine is 40'. I don't think you would like the additional wall and the narrow 10' storage area. I would do this: Put the dividing wall in the middle of the 48' dimension, giving you a 14x24 paint/storage/clean assy room with its own overhead door. Your shop area would be 22x24 with its own overhead door to seperate the shop area from the front parking area. If laid out carefully, you would have room for a project car in the shop area, where you can contain the mess from grinding, sanding, etc from the parking area. When using the lift, just open the overhead door and you will have access to tools. This leaves you with the 24x36 parking/lift area to park 2 cars with one on the lift. Hope this makes sense, I will take some picts of my shop to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Cheers
Steve

If you look below at my shop you will see what I did. I kept one bay of the shop as a machine shop/clean area. The rest is dirty. May be some ideas you can use.
