Inside Wall Sheathing

Ok, guys. Looking for ideas for inside wall ideas

My plan was do 5/8" plywood 4' up from my 20" concrete stem wall and 5/8" sheetrock from there up. The problem is I just got a quote for sheetrock for $8000 and I know the plywood is about $45 a sheet and I need about 25 sheets

I do NOT want to do tin on the inside for a couple reasons. Moving outlets and airlines to land on the flats(everything is IN the walls). Then there is the noise, metal just reflects it. Then, if/when it gets dirty. It is not easily paintable.

Any other suggestions?

Try $25 a sheet and that is the cheapest stuff.

sheetrock isn't even $5/sheet so i think theres a typo

I've used 5/8 type x drywall for the last 2 garages ive built. no regrets.

*I am a remodel contractor so I have all the tools and skills to install basically any type finish, drywall wins for me

Is this an attached garage that needs the fire code? If not why use 5/8 drywall and sub in 1/2"? It would be above the danger zone of bumps and getting damaged being over 4ft off the deck. Easier to hang. I got 5/8" x 12ft drywall for my place. I regretted it when I unloaded the 30 sheets by hand off the trailer ... but it was free. Win win right? 1/2" is a dream to hang vs 5/8" drywall.

I would run thinner plywood. Run a chair rail or a trim board belt line that will blend the wood to drywall. 5/8 ply seems like overkill. 7/16" would be more then enough. I walk past the cull section at my local HD regardless of what Im buying with these lumber prices in the stars. You would be surprised what they cull and what you can ask them to cull. 70% off. I walked out the other day with 3 sheets of 3/4 ply what was near perfect and a couple sheets of sanded 5/8" a few days later.

How may sq ft of drywall was that bid for? You've got a big build so that doesn't seem out of line. We put 1/2 plywood up on the farm shop for the lower wall coverings and it hasn't had any issues so far with not being substantial enough. If code or insurance is requiring 5/8" either have to deal with the offset in thickness or match with the ply

On top of a 24 inch stem wall I put 4 feet of "garage panels"
(That is 1/4 inch peg board pre-painted white)
Above that is 1/2 OSB
It has proved strong enough to hold up anything I can lift up to hang on it.

I used 7/16 OSB, but that was back when I could get it for less than $7 a sheet. At today's prices, I'm not sure what I'd use.

The nice thing about using a wood product is that you don't have to worry if your sheetrock will hold whatever you want to mount to it and you don't have to look for studs.

3/4 in BCX bought 16 sheets today for 36.92 with 11% OFF at Menards 7 ply last month they had 9 ply.

I just got a quote for sheetrock for $8000

What exactly did the $8k include ???? Sheetrock is about $12-15 a sheet for 1/2" and if you need 25 sheets of plywood you should only need 25 sheets or drywall. Thats maybe $300 tops. A couple of boxes of screws and some tape and mud ? Are they charging that much to install it ????

I have drywall in my attached garage at home and it has held up just fine for 40 years. The last building that I had my business in was about 75% drywall and I never had a problem.

I just dont see any problem using it. Maybe put it up yourself and just pay them to tape and finish it ? $8000 is crazy

Sorry guys it has taken me so long to get back

1250sq/ft of ceiling 8' off ground for sheetrock
1350sq/ft of the upper 10.5' of wall for sheetrock
so 2600sq/ft of area

Was going 5/8 on ceiling for fire resistance and take more abuse that the 1/2 since it is a lower ceiling
I was going 5/8 on the walls because I am studded out 2' on center.

Not sure how 1/2" plywood would work on 2' center framing

I did 1/2" plywood on the walls but I got it just as prices were starting to go up and I have 16" framing.

Included the space under the stair and a number of interior walls. I paid up front for the materials when they were delivered by a specialized supplier, and their guys put the sheets throughout the first floor according to my drywaller's instructions, and the material cost was similar to Menards who would have dropped off a stack in the driveway for much more in delivery charges. I was required to use 5/8 firecode sheetrock due to building setback and zoning variance that I got in order to put the building where I wanted it.

Thank you. That sound MUCH more reasonable. Mine is all on one level so i would think even cheaper since it is easier
