Our city only has an email and voice mail line to request an inspection. I called last Monday for a rough in and it hasn't happened. There is a cell for the inspector on the permit, should I call or just be patient? My contractor said he normally gets next day inspections, I assume home owners permits fall to the bottom of the list.

In my limited experience in my city, homeowners usually get better response than contractors when you request inspection or want additional information. I assume the city wants to keep the homeowners happy, but requests from contractors are a dime a dozen.

I would give the guy a call to see what the schedule is. If they really didn't want calls they shouldn't put it on the form and since people usually get quicker service it seems like a reasonable thing to do. Maybe you request got lost.

In my experience, inspectors typically only answer their phone for a short period in the morning, say from 7am to 7:30am. After that they are out in the field so they'll let it go to voice mail, and they'll call you back when they have time. So, go ahead and call, but be prepared to leave a voice mail and then be patient - it may take a day or two but they should get back to you eventually.
