On one side of my basement I have both the water heater and my gas boiler, and for some reason there is no floor drain nearby. If the water heater starts leaking or the safety valve pops, water runs all the way across the basement before it can drain. I've decided I need to add an emergency floor drain and I'm researching requirements and recommendations.
It seems like a 3" floor drain is the recommended size, and floor drains now require a trap primer to keep water in the trap. I've found 2" PVC floor drain traps with a trap primer fitting and built-in clean-out, but in the 3" size I can only find commercial cast iron traps (a trap with both fittings) that are very expensive. Is there something else out there at a reasonable price for a 3" P-trap with a trap primer fitting and clean-out?
I've also found conflicting information about what kind of venting I need for a 3" floor drain trap. Some articles refer to them as self-venting (due to the size), but others show a standard vent. What is the actual IPC requirement for venting a 3" floor drain?
