Installed an Eley Hose Reel

Well, after procrastinating nearly 2 years, I finally vowed to stop struggling with the Wal-Mart plastic POS hose reels that the previous owner of this place was so fond of. I got in on Eley's Easter special for free shipping, and ordered a real reel.

I was off work yesterday so I had a chance to install it on the side of the deck railing. Apparently the PO put in the railings by eye, so of course nothing lined up with the mounting holes. I decided to put in a 2x12 to mount it too. Couldn't find any PT lumber at Home Cheapo that I would have even dragged home for free, so I got a rough cedar 2x6 and doubled it up.

Yeah, I know, I might have over-engineered this a little...

Then bolted the reel mount to that using 3/8 x 2-1/2 hex bolts with Nylok nuts.

Assembled the reel onto the mount, and got the supply hose fed through and attached to the swivel.

Finally, rolled up the 100' of hose that I've been tripping over and that's been wrapped in a knot around the deck post. Man, this is so much easier! Wish I'd bought it like I planned to when I moved in here 2 years ago. $140 is still hard to swallow for a hose reel, but it does the job well.

That looks great (the installation and the reel)

I despise fumbling with a garden hose and trying to coil them up. It looks well worth even $140

I bought the portable version during that sale and it does seem like a well built reel... But mine showed up with lots of damage to the finish. Not to worry as they quickly addressed it and immediately had a new one in route. Great customer service!

That's a nice hose reel. I wish the price wasn't that steep. That cedar mount is going to outlive your deck railing.

Those reels are so nice. I had a hard time with the $140, too. But it worked out so well that I got a second one for the back of the house. I've never even winterized them, although truth be told, it rarely gets below freezing here anyway.

Are there rebuild kits for these? I had a cast aluminum AMES Reeleasy that lasted 10 years before the O-rings finally gave out. It had a lifetime warranty and I save ALL receipts so I was able to warranty it. The replacement they sent was a piece of **** so I took apart the original and replaced the O-rings and honed the swivel collar. Works again like new!!

I need another one or two quality hose reels and these look high quality. Would like to get a rebuildable unit, though.

I did the same thing about two years ago (bought two)! Treated 4x4 in concrete for the base / holder, and Eley reels. Don't remember why I didn't just buy the reels with the stands (probably thought I could (over) engineer something better). :dunno:

Anyway, agree it was tough to pay that much for hose reels, but having something that works well and will hold up for years has been worth it (so far). They seem very well built. I too got tired of buying the throw away versions every few years. Very happy with the Eleys.
