I want to install a utility sink in my garage, but the sink would be about 2 ft. below where it would have to drain. (did that make sense?). I know it is possible, but dont know where to start.

Thanks,
Rick

You need to install what is called a sewer ejector pump. For a sink only we usually install a small one that looks a lot like a garbage disposer, as it fits right up to the sink drain. It will turn on automatically when the water in it gets to a pre set level and pump it up into your drain. For bigger flow and toilets, we install a pit type sewer ejector. It is set below grade and has a macerator pump in it to handle the solids.

I built a basement apartment many years ago and used an ejector pump system to accommodate a bathroom (shower/sink/toilet)....it was bringing the waste up a good 5 feet to the main sewer line. It was a little spendy, but it worked flawlessly, never had any problems with it.

Can you recommend a specific one? I did a search and only came up with ones that do toilets and showers, and they were pricey. All I need is on for a single sink.

Thanks,
Rick

If a sewage ejector is what you want? then Hydromatic is the one to get. If you are ONLY going to use soap and water and NOTHING else get a Zoeller sump pump. Paint is NOT good for your plumbing at all. Good brands and not cheap. You get what you pay for.

Check out northern tool, they have some pumps in the $250 range that can pass up to a 2" object. I have heard them called grinder pumps.

If your sink is up against an exterior wall why not just make an opening in wall, install PVC, and drain it outside. I assume sink would be above grade.

I installed floor drain in my garage floor and inspector says it is legal if water drains out above grade. Different regions have different rules but maybe you can do it this way instead of spending $$$$$ for pumps, etc.

The sink is actually below grade. I have a raised ranch(called a split level in some areas of the U.S.) and the rear of the garage is below grade. I think I will have to get the pump as suggested.
I thought I would get off cheaper, but thats ok. It will stop the wife yelling at me for dirtying up the kitchen sink.

Understand. I have a tri-level and my lower basement was below the drain pipe until the town came in and installed city sewer/water.
Another way you could do it, but it's a little bit of work....dig a hole deep enough behind garage and put in a 15 gal or 55 gal barrel, (15 would probably be sufficient) cut out bottom, and fill it with pea gravel and have sink drain into that. My neighbor did that in his basement just in case water heater would spring leak, etc. It would serve as a mini drain field.

another idea.....
we have a macerator pump for our RV its 26' travel trailer, the way it works is it attaches to the main dump for the Black tank (bayonet fitting) just like a regular RV sewer hose, the discharge for the pump is a regular garden type hose, i can pump over 125' and about 5' height to any sewer clean out thats available or to a sewer dump station. It will pump higher im sure, just never tried it.
the pump brand new, was right at $100 and i recently found another one...at a garage sale for $5.00 that works great. it is powered by 12 volts and is very easy to operate and to deal with, clean operation.... just an idea.
when i get around to figuring out something for my shop im going see if i can make the extra pump work for me.

I just posted this in another thread, but this is an "infiltrator" system I put in for my garage sink/clothes washer. I used 3 of these sections, which was way overkill. After 4 loads of laundry, there's maybe 3/4" of water in there.

You could do this and just put it lower than your sink.

I forgot to mention that the grade directly behind the wall that the sink is on is about 4 ft higher than the sink. I found the water rmoval system that tcianci recomended on amazon for $220 shipped. I will just plum it into an existing drain. Thanks for all the help guys. I dont have alot to contribute, but do have alot of questions.

Thanks,
Rick

I'm looking for one like this for a laundry room sink; should be able to take bleach. I can't seem to find the right name for them, can you point me to one at plumbingsupply.com ?

The one at plumbingsupply.com was called a drainosaur WRSC-6. It's not the real small one that I remember fitting up to the sink drain but its small enough to fit under your laundry tub. Check w/ manufacturer on the bleach but it probably won't be a problem

If you do go with the drainosaur WRSC-6, look on Amazon or ebay, I found it alot cheaper on either one of these sites.

I have a raised ranch also. The sink in the garage and the sink and washer in the laundry room both drain into a system I bought at home depot. It is basicly a 10 gallon or so plastic box with a sump pump in it. It fits under the laundry room sink. It has been in and working for 6 years, and have never had a problem with it. It is a called - Flotec 1/4 hp laundry tray system, model number FP0S1800LTS-08. We bought it at Home Depot, I think it was around $200 or so.

Thanks, in this case I'm looking for a small one, preferably with no resevoir, like the "garbage disposer" type you mentioned; if you find it, please let me know.

Yep, I installed one of those for our wet bar, works quite nice and is fairly quiet with a tv and a few people in the room!
