New disposal in new sink.

Got everything in OK up to here. Last couple of steps: "Hang disposer by aligning 3 mounting tabs with slide-up ramps on mounting ring. Turn mounting ring until all 3 mounting tabs lock over the ridges on the slide-up ramps."

Just can't get the 3 tabs to engage! Very awkward, difficult, frustrating.

Help!

Recently installed one myself. Double and triple check to make sure the unit is all the way up in place. Take your time. Get a bright light to check EVERYTHING out. It is something that's preventing proper seating of unit, is my guess.

The other thing to check would be the retaining ring itself. Sometimes the mounting holes are offset from one another and the ring will only go on one way. So you may need to rotate the ring 1/3 or perhaps 2/3 to get proper mounting hole alignments, then push her on and tighten to specs.

Or perhaps it is the unit itself that must be inserted to the sink bracket in a very specific way.

Good luck...step back and look things over closely. You'll eventually see the problem.

The mounting ring just didn't seem to want to seat all the way up to the black rubber at the top of the disposal, before trying to engage the mounting tabs.

Finally got it to snap up tighter to the top, and got the tabs engaged!

Thanks for your help.

Trying to install the heavy, awkward disposal, can be a real PITA sometimes. I've read of people using a scissors jack to raise it up, so the locking tabs engage.

I have one of these that makes the job ludicrously simple:

You just insert a screwdriver into the rolled tab on the locking ring, and use that to turn it.

if you have a dishwasher that goes to the disposer, make sure the plug is removed.

Hold onto the metal nut with one hand, your other hand under the disposal. Make sure you have pushed it all the way up in the hole before you attempt to spin the nut.

I remember having that problem as well. The only thing I can suggest is to hold the whole thing in place, pushing upward, while spinning the ring in the wrong direction. At some point the ensemble will shift upward, then you spin the ring in the correct direction to lock it.

If it's any comfort, it only hurts the first time. I just pulled mine out last week to change a gasket. The reinstall took only a few seconds.
