Installing high bay lights.

I recently purchased lights for my garage, also purchased a surface mount bracket. I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. Do I screw the mounting backing to a truss or do I mount the bracket to a ceiling box? Thanks

It looks like the bracket doubles as a box, and so it would be screwed to the truss.

That would leave the top open. The instructions are horrible that came with them.
