Installing OSB on interior walls

Now I'm considering hanging 7/16 osb on walls and ceiling. I'd like to paint it and have a relatively smooth surface. Couple questions.

1. What is the best way to hang it, nails or screws, and best way to hide the heads?

2. Best way to finish the seams so they're not visible after you paint the osb?

I hung OSB on my ceiling and used my air nailer. I filled the heads and gaps with painters caulk, then slapped on the primer.

i did the walls with nails and the ceiling with screw, i did not fill the heads.

i would consider screws all the way and not fill the head in case you ever want to pull a sheet off to get behind it.

I put two coats of paint on my OSB before hanging it and then just did touch up. Nail gun really makes it easy.

I really didn't worry about the joints or nail heads. Maybe this spring touch them up. I would think Nutt's caulk would work well and be easy to do.

I nailgunned the ceiling and screwed the walls. I also painted all of the ceiling and most of the walls before I hung it.

I used screws for the walls when I hung my OSB. I left the heads exposed in case I ever needed to take a panel off. Filled the seams with caulking and sanded the whole wall with 100 grit then 220. Primed it with Kilz and then 2 coats of paint.

You think it would work to use drywall compound? It would be a lot of linear feet of caulk.

Looks great, can you even see the screw heads?

So I imagine hanging the first sheet perfectly even with the opposite wall is very important because things could get crooked pretty quick and the seems would misalign badly.

Here is mine. OSB walls and celling hung with air staple gun. 2 coats of cheap primer from Ollies, 30$ for 5 gals. No gap fill used. Also if using latex which is water based paint when temps are hot, so it drys quickly and not lift, separate the fiber chips. Otherwise use oil base and you'll not have any separation. This is with either primer or paint.

Looks good, did you hang it with the smooth or rough side out?

Hung it smooth side out. Screw heads are noticeable if close enough. I didn't try to paint them on purpose, just left them with whatever covered them when rolling the wall.

I use screws to hang osb, its just easier for me. As for the seams all i do is pre paint the edge to help hide the seam better so if my top coat isnt perfect i dont see a hint of green/blue/yellow ect that was but on by the distributor.

Fwiw I have been told that stuff burns easy. My understanding that is against code here for an attached garage.

Correct - for an attached garage the attaching wall should be 5/8 drywall.
Everywhere else it serves as a great surface for mounting PVC airlines.

I used 7/16 wafer in my previous shop garage and plan to in the current one. I skim coated the wafterboard with joint compound before painting. It smoothed it nicely. I screwed it to the studs and then just skim coated and painted the wall. I have some cheap ceiling paint the wife doesn't want in the house. Looks like it will go on the walls and ceiling of the shop.

I initially had waferboard on the ceiling of my previousl shop but then I got to thinking about fire code and took it down and put up 5/8 fire rated drywall. The family room was above that garage. My current garage already has the fire rated drywall. It has had the seams and screw heads mudded. In my previous garage, I just used battens over the seams. Then you could take it down and put it back up.

OSB will expand and contract significantly depending on the humidity. If you **** the edges it will bow and pop. Been there done that.

Not every seam need caulk but I did use several tubes of it. If I was in doubt a crack or seam might show, I tried to fill it and smooth it over.

Nobody is going to come into your shop and nit pick it, if they do . . . . :monkey_pi

I've got 7/16" OSB on part of my garage ceiling and walls for about three years now. Unpainted... Humidity ranges from 15% to 95%. Still as tight as the day I hung it.

Obviously, your mileage may vary...

some of my osb went ziggy zaggy and some of it stayed nice and straight. Not sure if it was the brand or install method or humidity when installed. Or???

I still like it but may have done steel on the roof and osb on the walls.

I used screws. Lots of screws:lol_hitti

Highest column is 18'

I never hung OSB or drywall before, and did it all by myself. It's not very difficult. I used screws just in case I need to take the OSB off to fix/run wiring or whatever. During the construction of my shop, the builders used nail gun, and it was indeed very quick. Until we discovered something that needed to be fixed behind one of the OSB's they hung. Digging nails out of OSB is such a pain in the you know what.
