Installing Snap On riser questions

Did you drill holes in your worktop to install the riser or just let it sit on top?

Also, has anyone repainted a riser? Did you strip it first or just sand and paint?

I don't have a riser but I know you have to have a work surface (stainless, butcher block, etc) so I'm guessing the bottom of the riser goes under the work surface.

AND, if you bought that riser for $100, that definitely deserves a YOU ****.

It will move around as you open and close drawers or roll the box across the shop, so yes it should be attached. I didn't get any hardware with mine I bought used either. I have a maple top so I just used some short screws with a really large head. That said, I would have no problem drilling the top of the box and using bolts & nuts without a "top". I know Snappy says they cannot be used without a top, but consider the source. I guess it depends how you intend to use the box/riser. I beat the hell out of mine and use it for a work surface everyday. I would be willing to bet if you avoid that, you'll be ok.

Mine is powdercoated that Royal Blue. I hate that color. I had the painter at work sand it and reshoot it red to match. No problems so far.

I thought $100 was a decent deal too, enough to buy it and figure out the assembly/color stuff later.

I have a stainless steel top already, but I'm a little hesitant to drill holes in a $700 piece of shiny steel before checking if its supposed to come with some hardware that goes under the worktop (but I guess not).

I was thinking of maybe bending up some metal that could go around the worktop so I wouldn't have to drill the top. I would rather tack weld a C to the riser that would go underneath, than drill the top I think.

The guy before me had sanded it already to get it ready for paint, but I think I'll give it another sanding before painting it.

From what I've seen in other threads, I might as well go to a paint shop and have some paint mixed up to match since PPG colours are proprietary? What would something like this cost to paint properly at a shop vs me spraybombing it?

the spray bomb cans from snap on match perfect but you would need a few cans for a nice and even finish. I wouldn't try to get all the powder coating off that will take for ever.Just rough it up a bit.
to have a body shop paint it i would guess around $300-$500.

the riser looks best sitting on a stainless steel top. two colors ( box black riser blue ) actually looks good in some cases.
