Insulate the roof or build a ceiling....

Working on insulating the upper part of garage/pole barn now.
Thought I had made up my mind on using Styrofoam in the ceiling.
BUT after crunching numbers etc, it may be more cost effective to have someone spray foam it.
I will start getting estimates, but before that I wanted to pose a question.
Should I have it sprayed in the rafters on the vapor barrier or figure out a way to put it on the actual ceiling (if it had covering on it)?
Right now everything is open beams.
If I put it on the ceiling it will take a bit more prep as they put the trusses on 8ft centers, so there will have to be some grid work done..

Will I really notice alot of difference between doing the rafters instead of the ceiling?

I do like the option of having a little more overhead to work with in the center of the building.
BUT it's not a huge problem if I don't.

Thanks,
BTI

First, I doubt that a true vapor barrier (ex: 6 mil poly sheeting, perm about 0.06) is required or a good idea in SE Ohio. You DO want a vapor retarder, however, and you do want to AIR SEAL. Check your code, and see what perm range is required. If it says "one perm or less" then the airtight drywall approach is fine(if you decide to put in a ceiling and sheet rock it). That is our code here in Frb, and SE Ohio is a lot warmer. You can spray closed cell foam on most roofs; I don't know about metal, but it is sprayed on trusses and plywood sheathing a lot.

The barrier is already there...it's the bubble wrap lookin' stuff.
It was installed when building was built.
I'm kind of stuck with it.
I need to find some installers around me, they have sort of dried up the last couple years.
