Insulating a Pole Building

Hello all,

I'm just about finished with wiring my pole building so it's time to start thinking about insulation.

Here is my plan, note I've never done anything like this before.

Use 2" foam board in between the 2x4's that the sheet metal is screwed into.

Then use 2x4's to "frame out" away from the foam board and install fiberglass insulation. There will be a 2" air gap between the fiberglass & foam board.

How does that sound? Building is located in PA and measures 30w X 30l

Thanks for your help.

I did something similar to this but placed 1" reclaimed polyiso insulation board in between the outside wall girts leaving a 1/4" gap all around. Then I filled the gaps with spray foam to air seal. Now I'm going to put 6" fiberglass batts in the walls.

I'm sure you know, but doing it entirely in spray foam is the best way if you can afford it. If not, you could do a mix of the foam board AND spray foam like I did. So lay your foam board where you want (I put mine over the 2x4 girts), then spray foam it with 1-2" of CC or 3-4" of OC. Or whatever combo gets you the desired R-value you want. When I did the math, it still cost me the same price doing it this way rather than buy batts...of course it helped that I got all my EPS foam really cheap.

If your joists aren’t perfectly straight; using rigid foam is going to be a PITA....... I’d spray foam if you can afford it, I did a 22’x14’ ceiling joists using 4” of rigid foam and it took forever

I did it the way Morton Buildings does it, with hanging blankets.

Look how cozy they look! lol!
