Hi,

I have just attic above the attached garage. The space above the garage is not insulated. The walls and garage door is insulated. Will insulating the space above the garage result in noticeable gain for the cost?

Thanks

The gain is dependant on where you're located, which you don't have listed.

Up here I wouldn't recommend anything less than a foot of insulation in that space, but obviously the Canadian prairies see more sub zero temps than you do. There doesn't appear to be any vapor barrier under those rafters... perhaps somebody in your climate zone can chime in on that as I'm not sure if there would be enough temperature variation for that to be an issue there. I would think you would have a noticeable gain in comfort by insulating yourself away from the summer heat that collects up there regardless of any gains in winter heating.

It looks like this is an attached garage. As all say, insulating the ceiling is most important......if you are going to heat the space. Otherwise, it's not critical. However, I will tell you that insulating the ceiling (and the walls are already insulated (are you sure?)) so the garage temperature will change much more slowly after insulating. It will not get as hot in the summer and will stay warmer, in general, during the winter.

I would say yes. Like others mentioned, heat rises and putting that insulation there is going to help.

I actually put the ceiling in and insulated it, with no insulation in the walls. This alone kept it warm enough without heat where the snow would melt off. Also, in the summer, you will be much cooler with it insulated.

Only if you are also heating/cooling the garage, or plan to do in the future.

At my old house 2,000 sq ft ranch house I added additional cellulose insulation to the house. The attached 2 car garage was not insulated and I had plenty of bags of cellulose left over. Rather than return them, I dumped it on the garage ceiling. Probably went from nothing to 12" of insulation in the garage attic.

I don't recall feeling a noticeable difference before or after, but I never heated or cooled the space. In the middle of summer it still was unbearable, as was in the coldest time in winter.

If you are heating or cooling, then yes it would matter.

Yes. It's better to insulate above than it is to insulate the walls.. :)
