I have a 30x40x10 pole barn detached garage that im working on finishing the interior of. It has attic trusses (8/12 pitch) with 14 ft wide room with stair access from below.
Im planning to spray foam the walls and possibly the short section of roof that will be the attic ceiling. I have already put up vent panels in each bay for ventilation so i can spray over them and then put up 2x4 sized batts over the spray foam in that section of the roof truss. That should give me about~R30. The rest of the roof, the short section at the peak ill do with batts, i can probably fit R38 in there even though its a 2x4. Attic space walls are 2x4 but i can put whatever depth batts in there that i want really. The gable ends in the attic will probably also be spray foamed.
The ceiling will be metal panels, and i can put in R38 batts in the section that is not under the attic floor.
My main question is do i need to insulate the section of the ceiling between the ceiling and the attic floor? If so, it is a 2x8 bottom cord, so would just putting in a 2x6 sized batt work understanding i still have the insulated attic above that? I could also layer (2) 2x4 batts to fill the 2x8 cavity.
I plan to heat with probably a dual head mini split, one head in the garage below, and one in the attic above.
Those of you with similar arrangements, did you insulate between the garage and the attic when both are going to be conditioned? I was leaning towards not insulating and having some transfer of heating/cooling between the two.
Location is Southwest PA.
