OK, probably been answered a bajillion times.

I had my garage built as a shell and siding and now I'm doing the wiring, insulation and interior walls.

Construction is 2x6 walls, headers appear to be 2x10's doubled with no insulation or plywood sandwich, open spaces of the header to the interior. The depth of the space is 2.5 to 2 5/8 inch.

I live in NNY so it gets cold. Before I put on the wall (1/2" b/c plywood) I want to fill the headers with insulation.

What would you use 2" blue rigid foam board and forget the extra space?

or peel down my faced r19 battens to fit with much less insulation?

thanks in advance

I would use rigid foam, glued to the header with construction adhesive. Cut it a little small, so there's a 1/4" gap around the edges, and then seal it with spray foam.

The latest trend in insulation is rock wool, and you might be able to find 2-1/2" thick batts to fit in that space too.
