I live in Oceanside and starting on the garge soon and thought

is it a waste of time and money to insulate and turn my garage into a sauna in the summer

or

just drywall it and move forward

seeing what you guys have done or what you would recommend

I'm up in Fresno and I vote for insulate it. I've owned both insulated and uninsulated. Granted insulated faced east and uninsulated faced west but there was a huge difference. I'll be pouring a pad next week for my new garage and it will be insulated, have radiant barrier sheathing and insulated garage doors. Keep this in mind, women may get naked in a sauna but they don't tend to stay too long.

If you are expecting too much heat plan on roof vents before insulation.
Try it for a year before you drywall.
If it is still to hot you can insulate then.

I'm in N. OC(Fullerton). I say spray foam at least. Are you right on the coast or back inland a bit(back by the marsh)? If nothing else, the insulation will help be a sound barrier. Even if you have some property and neighbors are not an issue, your significant other will appreciate the noise attenuation from all the pounding/grinding/drilling et.al.

When I build mine, I will be doing as much insulation as possible to keep sound down. For me, it gets very hot during the summer (100+) so I'll also be doing radiant(reflective) heat insulation on the roof at least.

Contrary to what you imply, insulation will NOT make the shop hotter by itself. Actually it will help keep the temperature more consistent. Cooler when hot and warmer when cold.

I'd be interested in seeing the shop. Any pictures of the process?

Insulate. I just did may walls and haven't gotten to the roof yet but it has made a big difference. I am considering doing reflective insulation like swharris has in the pic. I think I am also going to put in a fan to pull the heat out and vent welding fumes

I'm in the Los Angeles area....about 4 miles from the beach....

Mine is NOT insulated...but I do have drywall...

It is also 2 story...ground floor stays nice....upstairs gets real warm in the summer.....I insulated the front wall that faces south...but most of my heat comes in through the ceiling. I'm in the process of putting up foam insulation...seems to help...but it really is a mater of getting good ventilation....

The temp swings down there are just not that much....even in the winter time mine stayed nice even on the coldest nights....

As for sound....if I have the garage door closed and I use the table saw, my wife does not hear it unless she steps out the back door...but if she is in the house...she does not hear it. I think most of the noise goes through my uninsulated main garage door.

I have the compressor behind my garage now in a compressor shed....no insulation...and it's a comfortable low level buzz....but if your in the closet....LOUD.

With all that said....insulation is cheap...labor is not hard....

Santa Barbara here and I just finished insulating and drywall a few months ago. The insulation is more for sound proofing so as to not piss of the neighbors in the middle of the night BUT I also heat my garage so its nice for it stay warm in the winter. The other advantage is that is stays cooler longer during the day, at least until noon or so its nice and cool, then it warms up and I open the doors and skylights to let the heat out.

Well, I'm not in Cali but if I was. My vote would be insulation and A/C. My summers aren't even that warm comparatively but I got A/C in there. I like the idea of closing it up and keeping it bug free, even when it's warm. But bottom line...it's your decision.

Summer in Madison is much hotter than summer in Oceanside.

Insulation won't make your garage any hotter, ever -- it will make it take more time to transition every morning from cool to hot. And it will also make it transition more slowly from hot to cool (if you don't have AC in there). So the thing to ask yourself (if you don't plan on AC) might be this: when are you in the garage more? 10 am or 10 pm?

I'd suggest looking at blown-in cellulose. It is basically recycled newspaper, so I'm told. It does a great job insulating for both sound and temperature.

Several people here have looked into it & reported that for the cost of buying the cellulose & renting the equipment at Home Depot, they were able to instead just hire it out to a pro for the same amount of $$. So check into both methods.

Tell us what you end up doing. And some pictures would be nice, too.
