I am looking to properly insulate a garage for heat/AC. The garage 20x24ft and is about 40yo and has some old insulation and drywall. I don't see any soffit vents or ridge vents.

I'm looking for advice on how best to insulate. It's use will be more of livable/rec-room/storage space and not a work garage. I'm considering removing the car garage door.

I know this is a big open-ended question but I'd appreciate any suggestions or pointers I should investigate or consider.

I've only done small DIY projects so much of this is new to me but always looking to learn.

One possibility I'd like to explore is including the entire attic within the conditioned space. So the roof joists would stay exposed, gable vents removed?, and insulate the roof as a vaulted ceiling? That would give me the most usable conditioned space.

1st floor looking up to second floor

2nd floor rear wall and lower portion of roof

Rear gable vent (vents are both front and rear)

Top of roof

I suggest you contact some local to you contractors and get quotes from several.

Disregard the extremely high and low quotes, the average price of those remaining should get you into the center of that Ball Park.

spray foam, from floor to ceiling and back down to the floor.
no need for soffit vents, roof vents, or gable vents...solid foam all the way around.
this cannot be beat, you will save costs long run and be more comfortable in the meantime.
I did a 60x40 stick built this way 15 years ago and it has proven to be a good way to go.

Thanks.. nice and simple. And the more I'm reading on this there seems to be a lot of push towards unvented roofs so this garage roof is already good for such an application.

I'm more thinking that same route of just getting quotes. That way I'm sure it's all done correctly versus any DIY attempt by me.
