Insulating Pole Barn Ceiling With Low Pitch

I am planning on insulating my pole barn with fiberglass bats and trying to figure out how to handle the edges near the soffit where I have little clearance to the roof. The roof is a 4/12 pitch and I have about 4" of space at the wall. I am installing rafter vents, no issue with the insulation blocking up the ventilation, but I am trying to decide if it is better to have R-38 compressed or to go out a foot or so from the edge with an R-19 and not have it compress?

Any thoughts?

My suggestion - consider blown-in insulation instead of bats.

Otherwise, It's best not to compress. Your idea of using R19 is a good one.

Below are a couple pictures of what I am thinking. Barn is 30ft across from steel to steel. If I put a 13" piece of R19 at each end, that leaves me with just under 28 ft. I'll fill that in with R38 4' batts.

Not ideal, but there is not a lot of room at the edges because the roof is so low.
