Insulating Rafters of Hip Roof.

Garage has 2x6 Rafters, If I use R13 can I get away with not putting the standard vent chutes? That should give me about a 2" air space between the insulation and the roof.

Will I have any issues with the shingles insulating in this manner. I know R13 isn't anything amazing insulation wise but I have to get something in there cause the garage is a hot box now since the walls are insulated but the ceiling is not. Ill over double the cost of the install if I add the necessary framing to make a proper ceiling since there are just 4' spaced collar ties now. If I need to ill use the chutes but if I can get by without them itll just make the install faster.

Best would be spray foam the rafters. But that is a little pricey. Sorry to bear the bad news but putting in a ceiling is the best option. A few 2x4's, vapor barrier, drywall and decent insulation will make a huge difference year round. And it really doesn't cost much.

Can we see a picture?

From what I recall reading on the net, you want a 1" space between roof and insulation. Because insulation is floppy, if you stuff it into the space it might end up touching the roof anyway.

I have seen guys discuss reflective foil insulation that, even though it's very thin, helps keep your heat in. This might be something for you to research to see if the claims are true.
