Hello all. I recently purchase a 3 bay garage, approximately 900 sq ft barn style that is timber framed with 4x4 and 6x6 posts. It looks just like a barn, wood boards on the outside and the inside is bare. I live in Connecticut where our temps range from 25-80 throughout the year (excluding extremes). I tried to share some links to the pics on my Google Drive but I can't because I'm new.
The third bay runs across the entire back of the garage and I want my make my garage gym there. I also want to be able to heat and cool the garage some because I tend to have a lot of projects going and spend a lot of time in my garage. I don't need it to be a perfect 65 degrees year round but I don't want to be lifting and working on trucks when it's 30 in my garage. Been there and I'm over it haha. I'm thinking a split unit.
I want to insulate it to the 4" framing and leave the 6" exposed. I'll use tongue and grove over the 4" posts so I can keep the look. Actually the previous owner did a corner just like that but it's hollow and obviously not going to give me any insulation but I do like the look. It does have some small windows above the garage doors I'm not sure how to handle as I'm sure their insulation value is pretty terrible. The second floor has a floor (one layer of plywood) but I'll have to finish that off as it doesn't reach the sides to all 4 walls.
So my question is how to best insulate it. I've seen and read a lot but I'd like some opinions because I feel like I've been staring at this stuff so long I'm just glazing over and then second guessing myself. I'll probably call a few people for quotes but I really like doing things myself and I'm in no real rush. Do a few sections at a time so I can think everything out, electrical, placement of the compressor set up, etc.
I thought about fiberglass bats but there's a lot trusses, etc. Cut foam to fit in and fill the cracks? I'm sure you guys have done all this before and I'd be foolish not to reach and take some advice.
