Insulation advice needed for pole barn

Building a 40x60 in middle TN with bookshelf girts.
I have enough vinyl backed fiberglass (same as on my ceiling) to cover the walls once.
I have enough 3” unfaced Fiberglass 5’ wide rolls to cover the walls twice.

Exterior will be metal.
Interior may be metal as well.
My plan was the drape the unfaced over each side of the wall and then put the vinyl backed over that on one side also. Should the vinyl be up agains the interior or exterior metal. I hope this wasnt too confusing. Thanks for the help.

The vinyl should be your "vapor barrier" and you want it on the warm side.

Not everybody uses house wrap on a pole building.


If it were mine and was fixing it up (not a simple cold storage bldg) I would most definetly use house wrap. It'll help block wind infiltration.

Vapor barrier should be on the inside if you intend to heat at all. A/C is not a problem as it tends to dehumidify as it cools.

Good morning neighbor, Not sure where in middle Tennessee you are but Im kinda on the line of middle/east Tn. in Cumberland county. I just had a 40x66 but up and did do Tyvek house wrap on the walls and glad I did. I never thought much about air infiltration on a metal sided building until reading about it here. When the wind blows I can hear the house wrap "rattle" telling me there is some air leakage. My plans are to finish, insulate and heat the inside over time and I feel the added protection should increase the efficiency of the insulation package.
I went with the Tyvek brand over some of the others wraps after viewing some videos showing that some of the others will pass moisture thru but the Tyvek did not. We do live in a much wetter/humid environment than some other places in the country

Definitely use the tyvek wrap, I bought 3 new rolls off Craigslist for $50 a roll and it makes a big difference in air infiltration. Then I used fiberglass unfaced and covered that with 10 mil plastic. R-Value is important but so is air infiltration.
