I have purchased a 40x80x12 timber frame hangar with steel trusses with no insulation or vapor barrier and planning to insulate it and finish off the side walls. My question is has anyone used vinyl backed regular metal building insulation on the ceiling and secured it to the runners/rafters ? I was thinking of just putting 24”x3“ faced house insulation but want a better look. I was planning to stud up the side walls and putting some kind of sheathing up. I am not really trying to heat or cool it “might in the future“ but to control condensation. The 6x6s are on 10’ centers and the ceiling runners are on 24” centers and I am on the Gulf Coast.

In your research I suggest you get a price for spraying in open cell foam. It has plenty of R-value for your southern climate, but is cheaper than closed cell.

As part of a remodel we had several walls and the entire underside of our roof insulated with Icynene open cell foam and it made a major difference in heating/cooling. Our attic is now conditioned space, which works out well because the A/C unit and ducts are there. Its currently about 20-25 degrees (Fahrenheit) here in Virginia, and the attic (which has no heat) is only about 5 degrees colder than the house.

One catch-22 for spray foam is that it must be covered with a thermal barrier (drywall, particle board, etc.) to separate it from any living space. I'm not sure how they handle that if you leave the roof deck exposed (no ceiling in the hangar) .
