About 90% done. What a ***** this project is. Being quoted over $6k for spray foam, I’ll Gladly spend a few weekends and save over $4500
Thank god for a scissor lift rental. Without it, no doubt I would have fallen 15’ to the ground
Anyways, I installed a radiant barrier directly over the frame rails. This gives me a 2.5” air gap and I followed the angle bracing to the roof. This angle gave me a really good air gap which is good for heat rejection. I then screwed 2” foam on the south wall (gets sun entire day) and both ceilings.
The rest of the walls will get 3/4” foam as well as the radiant barrier.
Both foam boards do have a foil on them and seems cheesy. I doubt the one on the board will do anything since there is no gap between that one and the main radiant barrier.
I know they say you are supposed to create a “envelope” with the radiant barrier. Since I have installed a big exhaust fan, I didnt close off the bottom 10” or so. It’ll be flapping loose for now until something changes. My thought process is the exhaust fan will **** out all the hot air that is trapped between the radiant barrier and the metal siding.
I do have another idea if this doesn’t work like I think it will. Ill install a small 8-10” exhaust fan in the middle of the ceiling. Heat rises, so once again, my thought process is all the heat will rise at the peak of the garage. The small exhaust fan mounted in the ceiling will **** out all that heat trapped between the metal siding and insulation and drop it into the main garage, at which time the main 30” exhaust fan will simply **** it out of the building.
My main fan turns over all the air in my garage every 2 minutes. So nothing will linger in there.
I also installed several louver vents to draw in fresh air for the fan. I need to trim off the excess foam and then spray it gray.
I have about 2300 square feet of surface area between the ceilings and walls.
Right now in Florida the temps are around 90 deg and I can maintain around 84 deg in the garage.
All in all I have about $2100 invested in this and a few weekends.
