I'm wanting to insulate over my 3 car garage which is attached. It's about 600sf and plan to blow in about 12" or R30. I'll also need about 14 baffles installed in one corner.

I was quoted $765 and this "feels" high. Any thoughts on the current going rate? Or for DIY how many bags would I need to purchase? I think I could use the machine for free from a big box store, correct? I just didn't feel like fighting with the dust/dirt of DIY.

Thanks in advance!

If i recall you get a free machine with 12 or 15 bags, something like that. They have both blow in cellulose and fiberglass. Check the bags for coverage, need to make a trip to the store. Once you get a material cost you can figure out the labor/profit cost they have, if it seems unreasonable then do it yourself. If its easy access it shouldnt take you long.

I did my 24x22, installed the soffit baffles as I built it, then blew in 18-20' of insulation. The machine was "free" to use, and the insulation was a tad over $325. Took about 2 hours end to end, and another 20 minutes to clean up...I did get the wife to feed the machine, as it is a 2 person job.

The stores all have a material estimator on their websites that is OK.

Your estimate is low compared to the Pros in our area. $800 for my 24x22, 10-12 inches...but they do a great job....back a truck in to the driveway and run a hose to the attic. Not a handful of dust on the ground anywhere. And they have all the material they need, can even add an inch or two on the fly if you want more R value.

I just insulated the rafters in my garage (they're 11' long by 22" wide from eve to peak). I spent about $230 on insulation rolls and still have about eight rolls left after buying 20 from Home Depot for $11/roll. If you buy in bulk, you can get them cheaper than the normal retail at Home Depot as they price them differently based on how many you buy.

My rafter area was 22'x11' on both sides for reference, so about $130 total for my whole roof at 462 square feet.

If you go the shredded/bagged insulation route, Home Depot rents the machine out for free if you buy the insulation from them.
