Insulation Difference?

Just wondering if there is much of a difference between Certainteed and Owens Corning fiberglass batts except the price. The Certainteed is $38.99-11% a bale covering 133.68 sq ft, and Owens Corning is $59.42 a bale covering 118.83. I like a good deal like anybody would, however when I see this kind of price difference I want to make sure I am not missing anything. Thanks

So is the R value the same on both? I'd figure that would be the deciding factor for me. I assume there has to be some sort of standard they have to meet to put whatever R number they have on there. It would be interesting to hear if there is a known difference in composition that would make one superior over the other and especially to warrant such a difference in cost.

R value is R value.

There are differences in kraft vs. non-kraft faced and what chemicals where used to make the insulation. Perhaps the cheaper stuff is un-faced and/or has more volatiles in the manufacturing process. i.e., wouldn't be used in a low VOC house.

Fiberglass is not the same as foams, foil faced or not.

I've always been told the more you compress it the less it can insulate because you are making it denser thus making it more able to transfer heat. Looking about halfway down (second paragraph in the R-Values section) in this article backs that up.

Yeah, I had a brain fart when I asked that question and went to google, which brought me back here to a thread from 2012. Apparently stuffing a R19 batt into a 3.5" wall will create a R13 insulation. Plan B

I've always preferred the Pink stuff, the Certain Teed is cheaper, especially considering teh 11% sale going on right now.

You are paying for Dow's advertising and the fact that they bleach and dye their insulation to make it a pretty pink color. I believe Certain-teed bleaches and dyes as well. I know John's Mansfield does neither.

Regardless of brand, R value is R value...

You will find seasonal price differences in insulation. Over the last year I have bought lots of FG from Lowes and HD to install in my barn. I buy a truckload at a time and have been bit by changing prices. One month the pink will be cheaper and the next month the brown will be cheaper. Same R-value, same product. You buy insulation for the R-value so color is not important.

For unfaced R-30 thick batts I really prefer the non-pink stuff. The brown I bought from lowes was less itchy and more dense.

So go forth and buy the cheapest product.
