Hello, I'm new here and hope I posted this in the correct place. I have a 30x30 ft metal shop in north Texas. The building was built in 2002 and has the insulation that comes in rolls and was draped over the metal frame before the skin was put on. It looks like while vinyl inside. I paint cars from time to time and I have noticed that small particles of the white vinyl or whatever it is, is flaking off and getting into my paint. The insulation is still in good shape except for this and I don't want to replace it. My question is does anybody know what I can brush or spray on the insulation to stick it or seal it down to keep it from flaking off? It's getting brittle and comes off when you touch it. I know don't touch it but it's that easy for it to come off. I tried some red devil adhesive with a brush in a small spot and it seems to work, but turned yellow and looks horrid. Any ideas? Thank you....

I understand your problem, where I work there is several outdoor pavilions, plus chicken wire to help hold it up. I wonder if best thing to do is put a drop ceiling in. You know the 2x4 lay in tile ceiling with grid.
I have the same ceiling as you with the rolled white-vinyl-on-one-side-fiberglass insulation secured with chicken wire directly to the roof.. This seems to be the standard pole building shop ceiling in Texas. I don't paint any cars or trucks in my shop, so I have not noticed any white flakes. My building was also constructed in 2002. I have thought about adding a white metal ceiling, but so far no problems with the ceiling. I am interested to see what the responses are.

Probably going to need to put up a new layer of plastic against the degrading material to trap it in place. big sheet of 4-6-8mil sheeting.
Anything you try to apply directly to the degrading material will likely just accelerate and widen its decay.

I have seen the problem before. There was some inferior product sold back then and that seems to be the problem. The insulation is okay but the vinyl is affected by repeated heat cycles.
There isn’t really an easy fix. On the one we reworked there was enough collateral load available and we installed white liner panel and also added some more insulation at the same time.

Thanks for all your replies and info. Sorry for the delayed response. I don't have the chicken wire, just the white vinyl or plastic or whatever it is. Chicken wire would still let the tiny pieces fall through. The pieces I see land on vehicles are tiny specs, hard to see but there. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming from. I thought it was coming from my air supply while spraying since the particles are so small. I thought about spraying a coat of clear coat to "seal" it. Although messy and expensive. Like somebody said, no easy fix.

Yea, building manufacturers want to sell you their insulation "package" and often cite "void warranty" if you do spray foam...
Hopefully if you had this building built, the manufacturer will help handle some of these costs. (Fingers crossed)

Well, it's 20 years old now. Insulation still works and looks pretty good. Just very very small particles coming off. When I'm not trying to paint I can't even tell anything is coming off it's so small. But in wet paint, especially dark colors it shows up like a diamond in a goats rear.

It might just be easier to fabricate a knock-down paint booth, PVC pipe and 2mil plastic.
