Insulation for a pole building questions

I'm working on the contract right now and wondering if I should spend the $$ for insulation. My building will have a metal roof and walls. I worried about my "toys" (motorcycles) rusting from condensation. The builder offered options of:

1/2" foilfaced panels on the ceiling & walls for a total of $2500

or

R-30 with liner panel on ceiling & R-19 w/liner panel on walls for $9,700 :yikes:

The building is only $14,400 so that sounds kind of crazy to me. What should I do??

I did insulation of the roof to reduce insulation and sidewalls of the shop area. I do not remember the price (72x40 but more like the $2,500 than the $9,700 (I would have remembered that). Labor prices probably different here. Happy with insulation of the roof, and probably should have insulated all the walls. It get pretty cold here. Depends on how much you work out in it. Sort of pay now or pay later (in fuel cost, which are probably only going up).

I'm still deciding on insulation myself, dont have an answer for you.
But consider spray foam like 1320 stang mentioned seems ideal for metal buildings cost varies huge from place to place. DIY thread on here somewhere. If you have not used the search function here do so lots of insulation threads.
P2000 looks interesting to me , just heard from a seller I could get 5/8" P2000 approx
$1.00 sq ft.

you might also consider Insulation 4 less

Hope this helps ...........

Closed cell spray foam works good on metal wall. I have it on a 30 x 40 shop. I also added R-19 fiberglass batts with OSB on the inside walls. I used white metal like the siding for the ceiling and had fiberglass blown in overhead.

Thanks for all the replys!

If I do the walls and ceiling do I still need to do the roof?? We tend to get "dew" with the temp. changes here in NJ and don't want it to rain in my pole building or rust on my toys.

Is it just for storage or are you going to heat all the time?

If it's for storage I would have them put the foam under the tin on the roof (cheapest)

If you want to heat all the time, it may be worth it to have them put the better insulation in, The roof is a big PAIN IN THE *** to do later. The walls are easy to insulate later yourself.

If you plan to drop the ceiling, yes you need to still put some kind of foam under the tin on the roof so you don't get condensation dropping onto the insulation above the drop ceiling.

Unless you have the roof sealed at the soffits you'll never get condensation on the inside of the ceiling (MAYBE if you have water seepage into the shop but I doubt it). Part of my shop has an uninsulated roof and, in 14 years, I've never seen any condensation on the inside in any weather, hot or cold. Remember the steel roof has ridges and plenty of air circulates around the ridges.

For the sidewall insulation have the contactor lay the sidewall girts (on 24" centers" on edge BETWEEN the poles instead of wrapping them around the poles. That way you can buy R-19 faced insulation and simply staple it to the girts...saves you time and money. the builder MAY charge extra for this but it won't be more than a few hundred dollars at most.

If one builder won't do it find another. It makes insulating very simple.

I wrapped my shop in 1" styro blue board and house wrap. It kept my shop pretty warm until I could finish my insulation job. BTW... I didn't have my guy lay the girts on end... big mistake!

Ceiling insulation? have a steel liner put in for the ceiling and use blown in ot batt insulation... do it yourself and save $$$.

Just for storage and to play with my toys on the weekends. I've had a few meetings with builders and they said not to do the roof if i'm doing a ceiling. Makes sence as all the heat will rise up and out the vents.

Great info.! I will ask......

ENVELOPING the building is GOOD! roof and walls yes-no moisture barrier in ceiling if you spray the roof area - Checkout a new business here in northern nj and let me know how you like the week old site! I built it myself!

my shop is 45x60 and i'm insulating the walls right now... i'm using 1/2" sheet styrofoam, doubled up... it's foil faced on both sides and seems to be working just fine.. i bought a trailer load of it at auction and have enough to do another whole shop... lol
