My neighbor came over last night and said his brother-in-law can get 100 sheets of 2" x 4'x15' sheets of this this foam insulated sheets for $15 a sheet. It has foil on both sides and has a r value of 13. They apparrently ordered too much of it at a worksite. They will load it up and bring it over Saturday morning if I'm interested. So I need a quick tutor session on Foam insulation.

I recently build a 40x72 polebarn with a 12 ceiling. Walls have 6x6 posts, 6 foot apart. We live in Michigan and planned to eventually insulate and keep the garage at about 45 degrees, then crank up the heat when I go out there to work on the snowmobiles, etc.

A few questions. Would this be a good insulation for the walls? How much is this stuff worth? He said he thought it cost them $45 a sheet.

If it's good to use how would you suggest finishing the inside using drywall? My quick thought, buy 1 1/2" sheets to put behind the posts to take up the gap. Then lay a sheet of the 2 inch foam. Seal joints with tape, build a 2x4 wall with 24" centers. I could then cut put a second layer of the foam board inbetween the 2x4's, cover with a vapor barrier, then sheetrock. Am I on the right track?

Or should I build 2x6 walls and just double up the foam insulation between the 2x6's? I could double the sheets which would give it a R26 value and finish all the walls for $1,500 in insulation. Help me decide if this is a good deal/good idea :)

I have been buying 1/2 4x8 sheets with foil on two sides for $10.50 a sheet. So, yes I would consider that a good deal. I have a small 24x32 pole building. Once the panels are all up Im going to frame 16" walls between the pols insulate with R13 bats and drywall.

I would believe $45/sheet. Thats the fiberglass reinforced foam, very strong but also very itchey when you saw or cut it. long sleeves and gloves because you will get splinters from even handeling it. I used it to insulate my snowmobile shop because I got a load of it for almost nothing from a friend who did built up roofs. The stuff for roofs has a different faceing, but the foam looks to be the same.I fasten foam boards uo with deck screws and 1/4" fender washers, you do not need many/board and the 1/4" washers and #9 screws make a flush surface when you are done. Do not over tighten them and break the faceing.

edit) I think you are spot on with your plan,2x4 is plenty, its a wall and anything over R 30 in a wall is approaching the point of dimenishing return. What you are planning is pretty much how I did the new shop too, except I used fg in the stud wall.

To tell the truth, this sounds a little fishy...make sure they're not hot. If somehow a contractor ordered that many extra sheets, I'd think he'd return them to the supply house for a credit.
