Insulation prices

Getting ready to insulate new garage. Checking prices at lowes/HD I was pretty amazed at the price difference between faced and unfaced rolls of R-30. An unfaced roll of R-30 that is 25 feet long can be had for $12.48. That same insulation that is faced with Kraft paper is $48 for a 4 foot long section. Am I missing something here?? How is the price difference justified??

Are you looking at that "batt in bag" stuff? That's crazy.

Before you insulate yourself, check out some insulation contractors in your area. I gutted my house and when it came time for insulation found that I couldn't beat the price from the contractors. Installed it came out a little cheaper than what I could do it for and it was done in 3 hours. Same R value, all inspected too. They get it in bulk so pay a lot less than we do.

If it has eco in the name you can always double the price. I use the R30 unfaced. I also watch and wait until it is on sale, normally at season change.

Last year I put a ceiling in my garage. When it came time for insulation, I found the cheapest way to go was to buy faced r-13, then go over that with unfaced r30. My HD has the unfaced r30 for 9.99 a roll right now.

It's not $48 for a 4 foot section. That is a bag of 4 foot long batts and there is probably like ten of them in a bag. Look again...

I'm thinking you didn't check what they are really selling. Menards has a much better price than that on faced insulation.

R-30 24"W x 48"L x 10" Thick Kraft-Faced Fiber Glass Insulation
$39.78
* 11 Batts * 88 sq. ft. 161-8035

This is very good advice....

I had the ceiling of my garage insulated with R-38 Paper Faced insulation for the same price I could get the stuff at the local big box crapholes.

With insulation I don't mess around. Let someone else deal with the potential side effects.

A friend of mine gave me this same advice the other day, I will definitely check this out.

Yeah, I was amazed at the difference in price between the faced and unfaced. Both Lowe's and HD are selling unfaced R30 at less than $10/roll here, while faced is in the $40 range for the same square footage. If you need the vapor barrier, it would be worthwhile to buy some rolls of plastic sheeting and take some extra time to do the job.

I did the walls myself.Then I priced HD for there blow in fiberglass for the attic.They wanted $486 for enough product then $60 bucks for the machine.They dont lend out the machine anymore you have to rent it.I called a local insulation company and they did it to R40 in celulose for $550.I just left for work in the morning and came home to a conpleted attic.

Not trying to high jack this thread...but a question for REG1952. What is your ceiling made of, and are you seeing much dust or residue coming through. I realize if this is finished drywall, it will be a non issue. I have OSB am trying to figure out what Im going to do.

McCoys here does not charge machine rental, just a $500 deposit. 10 bags of OC AttiCat blown in does 1000 sq/ft at R-19, that comes to $300 retail. I found that batt costs - retail, DIY- about 30% more for same R value.
