Insulation Question

I'm back, lost my Mom back around Thanksgiving so we put a hold on everything else as we prepare to take in my 87 Year Old Dad. Part of this is now needing to convert some attic space above our attached garage to finished space for clean storage.

Question is how do I insulate it? Here is the current set up:

- The attached two car garage beneath this space is not heated.
- The floor joists in this storage space above the garage does have basic 3 1/2" insulation in it now and the floor is 3/4" plywood
- The walls in this storage space above the garage are NOT insulated at all and are 2x4 studs
- The ceiling in this storage space above the garage is the actual roof rafters which are 2x6" and also NOT insulated
- I intend to sheetrock both the walls and ceiling in this storage space above the garage but it will not be heated nor cooled other than an attic gable vent that runs on a thermostat and kicks on I believe at approx. 75 degrees.

So my question is how should I insulate the walls and ceiling to keep the most exterior heat in the summer and cold in the winter out? I am in southern NJ where the winters can hit single digits and the summers can top 100 on occasion.

Also need to know about vapor barrier? or Kraft faced? or?????

Thanks all.

Jeff W.

I think your first question should be are the ceiling joists up to the task of storing anything at all.

You call this a "Storage Space"... is it?

Thanks and great question I did not give information on. The floor joists for the attic space are 2x8 and 16”oc. In addition they are only running half way across the garage to where they are supported in the center by a steel beam. The attic storage space is less than half as wide as the garage underneath. This has been unfinished storage space for years so Im sure it is fine to finish off too
